Today, I decided to give blood for the first time in my life. As an 18-year-old, 5'1", 110lb woman, I guess I shouldn't have been allowed there, much less permitted to leave the room to get some food. I ended up passing out in the middle of the dining hall. FML

Hello, OP here! Thank You all for your concern! I'm doing a lot better. I actually ended up passing out three more times before they carted me off to the hospital, where I took a nice nap. I think what did me in was my blood pressure, which to me actually seemed low to give blood. I have normally low blood pressure (96/84 is my average) and it was 100/85, or something like that. They also did not attempt to detain me. As for the amount, they took 2 cups from me, so one of the smaller bags. This is a company that regularly visits my university (not the Red Cross, if it was Red Cross it would be different), and my sorority sister who took care of me had two bags taken from her last year, she's about 5'5" and weighs maybe 170lbs and she nearly passed out. I think the next time I give blood, it will be with RC. They made no attempt to stop me as I went up a flight of stairs, handed my meal card over, and made my way over to the pop machine, which is where I fainted for the first time in my life. Thank You again for your concern, and I'm so glad that I did it.

At least your vein didn't collapse. Shame on the doctor who permitted you...at our blood drive you have to be 120

Don't feel bad I passed out last year after giving blood

169- you don't need to be so hateful. All I did was repeat what I heard from the blood drive workers. That doesn't mean I believe it, and that doesn't mean what they said makes sense. I just took the words of the professionals and gave it to nor. I do also hope you know that an uneducated person may become whatever they want in life. Just because I am 16, and have a lot to learn, does not mean I should "never become a doctor".

169- that's a little rude. For all we know, that could be how the blood drives in their area are run. I doubt that age could truly have an indication because everyone is a different weight and size at the age of 22, but they said they were merely repeating what they heard.

U can't give blood if u are less the 120lb and u hav to b 5'4.

Why is this weird? You're an ok age, height AND weight for donating blood. 110lbs is the minimum and I don't believe there is a max.

Plenty of people faint when they give blood or just because of any kind of needle, this is not just about weight. ;-) (Though it is true that depending on where you live, they will have a min. weight policy since they are going to take quite a lot of blood.)

Hey, at least it wasn't in the bathroom at school like me..

I am 5'3", weigh 130lbs, and have given blood since I was 17. Sometimes I get hot while giving blood so I normally drink something with sugar while donating to make me feel better. Also, sometimes I feel weak after and have to drink tons of fluids to get to feeling better. Maybe you're just not well hydrated or it lowers your sugar because you're so small.
