Today, I decided to give blood for the first time in my life. As an 18-year-old, 5'1", 110lb woman, I guess I shouldn't have been allowed there, much less permitted to leave the room to get some food. I ended up passing out in the middle of the dining hall. FML

Hello, OP here! Thank You all for your concern! I'm doing a lot better. I actually ended up passing out three more times before they carted me off to the hospital, where I took a nice nap. I think what did me in was my blood pressure, which to me actually seemed low to give blood. I have normally low blood pressure (96/84 is my average) and it was 100/85, or something like that. They also did not attempt to detain me. As for the amount, they took 2 cups from me, so one of the smaller bags. This is a company that regularly visits my university (not the Red Cross, if it was Red Cross it would be different), and my sorority sister who took care of me had two bags taken from her last year, she's about 5'5" and weighs maybe 170lbs and she nearly passed out. I think the next time I give blood, it will be with RC. They made no attempt to stop me as I went up a flight of stairs, handed my meal card over, and made my way over to the pop machine, which is where I fainted for the first time in my life. Thank You again for your concern, and I'm so glad that I did it.

At least your vein didn't collapse. Shame on the doctor who permitted you...at our blood drive you have to be 120

Many thanks to OP and all of you who give blood. Donated blood saved members of my family. Special thanks to DocBastard for giving dozens of times AND stitching up the very people who need donated blood.

You and I are the exact same height and weight and whenever I tried donating blood, the guy wouldn't let me. He said I had to at least be 130 pounds and it was probably because of that exact reason. Fyl, op. ):

First, good on you for donating. It's not always easy to make the time and face the needle. Second, lot's of water leading up to the donation and plenty of sugar/iron aftwerwards should fix you right up. Third, don't think about the needle or fainting. If you worry about them, it just gets worse.

I have never had a problem with needles and this was my first time ever fainting. I just go, oh, needle. Its going to do (insert what it does here) Okay! Look away (so I don't loose my courage) and let it do it's thing. Also, by looking away, it doesn't hurt as much!

The first time I gave blood I was 19, 5'5", 115 lb. I did not pass out. Most women have a bit too few hemoglobins to give safely. It sounds more like they didn't check your levels first, and that's unacceptable. As a newly informed donor, eat plenty of protein and carbs the days before you give.

Damn, I like your stats ;) haha

Where I live you can at 16 with a parents signature. I got upset because I'm 14 and it was a blood drive for my friend's cousin who has brain cancer. Shes only like 2 :( I spread the word though and got more people to donate blood for her

That's amazing! I love when people donate blood because they want to help others. It's sad how many times when I asked someone if they would want to donate blood, they ask, "What do I get?" It's sick; you get to save up to 4 lives! Isn't that enough?

Yup, same thing. I think it should be 120 and at some point height should matter, cause I'm short too

Be glad you can give blood. They wont allow me to. Not because I answered yes to their million questions, but because my veins are too small and my blood is too thick. FYL still, but dont let it stop you from trying again

They wouldn't have allowed you to do it if you didn't fit the requirements. So. Maybe eat more before you go next time?
