Usually someone who loves you enough to want to marry you would be forthcoming about a marriage that has not yet been legally dissolved. So OP had no reason to believe her fiancé was still legally married.

I've always taken the "crazy ex" with a grain of salt, as I've known people to use it to cover up cheating. Sorry you didn't find out until you were engaged to the guy, but now you can stop wasting your time on him and move on to someone who's actually worthwhile.
