Today, I found out that I owe the IRS money due to my previous job not taking enough taxes out. I am broke, unemployed, and was counting on a big refund so I could pay for my divorce. FML

Seriously--it is not your employers responsibility to take out "enough" taxes for you. Thats all on your shoulders!! When you get a check, you should always look at how much federal/state is being withheld. If there is too much, or not enough, it is YOUR responsibility to fill out a new W4 form to adjust it. Part-time jobs rarely withhold enough taxes, even if you have several part time jobs. The government views each job as your only job, and pretty much gives you your entire wage. You need to withhold an additional $5-10 per check with part-time jobs if you don't want to pay in.

Your fault, moron. You know that form you fill out? The W-4? You tell them how much to take out. You screwed up.

YDI for having a crappy life!

That sucks. Big time. FYL, definitely. I can never figure out the tax system, and how much I'm supposed to pay. I ended up making a huge fool of myself last year for asking for an explanation when I had to pay a (for a student) rather large amount of money that I apparently owned them. It's such a jungle, and I can't even begin to imagine how much it sucks having to go through a divorce unemployed, and then finding out there has been such a mistake. And I think the people who say "YDI" are being unnecessarily harsh.

they don't care they want all the money they can get wheather it's a few dollars or a million

When I was working for the local university, I found out that they weren't taking enough out of my check even though I filled out my W-4 correctly. They had entered it into their system incorrectly therefore it was their responsibility to fix it.

YOU determine how much I held out in taxes; YOU have to fill out a W-4 when you first go to work for a company.

And when you DO fill it out correctly and they screw up?

Ah, the wonders of the common law system! Whenever I hear stories like this, I feel so happy that I don't live in the Commonwealth or the US. FYL

OP, I know how you feel...I found out two days ago that my last job didn't take out any federal taxes >.< They did in 2008, but not 2009 for some reason (and I didn't fill out another W-4 or anything). I realize that paying taxes is part of being a US citizen, but I wish the IRS made it easier.

Americans should really complain when they GET a huge refund!! WHY??--because its YOUR money that you worked for all year, but loaned it to the government interest free!! You dont get a big refund because the government is doing something "nice"---you get it because you didn't collect it through out the year like you should have!!

Exactly. People should pay the correct amount and put the rest in some form of savings. If they really like tax refunds, they can always just forget about it then take it out when the season rolls around. That way they get a couple percent more money!
