Today, I found out that the motorcycle I paid cash for was an illegal import. My plates are canceled, I have to turn in the bike for it to be destroyed, and the seller has vanished off the face of the planet. FML

You're lucky you didn't get into more trouble, where I am from buying a stolen good is illegal and you can end up paying a fee / going to jail for it

Motorcycles have a VIN number just like cars. If the guy couldn't produce a title of give you the VIN to check it out, you should have walked away.

Something similar happened to me a couple years ago! I bought a bike from a dealer in February and when I went to renew my tags in November I found out it had a title wash. Only after getting the state prosecutor involved did I get my money back.

Obviously you did not buy this at a licensed dealer of any kind. And you paid cash??? Whoever sold you the bike apparently saw you coming. You deserve it big time for not seeing the red flags.
