Today, I found out why the rent is so cheap in my new house. Apparently the previous tenants violated their lease by keeping illegal exotic pets. They responded to fines and eviction by letting all the animals loose in the basement, like the (admittedly gorgeous) albino cobra I found curled on my laundry. FML

Yeah, it's not the only little friend I've found. And considering that when I took the snake to a reptile handler who knew a vet for venomous snakes because it was pretty and I had noticed some scaring, it turned out that the snake had the venom glands removed (improperly and likely illegally) So I really don't think they gave a damn about their animals at all. Yeah, I've found a few dead scorpions, mostly those black emperor scorpions anyone can get in a pet store. A few more interesting snakes and a couple harmless but interesting colour mutations of ball pythons. A couple of them were literally tied in a bag and just left there. Presumably they survived by eating each other. Aside from a rattlesnake and some weird ass snake that seemed to make a ton of noise by rubbing it's scales together nothing really spectacular. Glad I have a friend who's snake obsessed who introduced me to a guy who handles dangerous snakes because I was more interested in the kind of snake that can kill you rather then the pet store variety. I point them out and he takes care of it.

I'm pretty sure you can get out of that lease.. There has to be some sort of disclosure violation with that.

You're an angel for actually caring for these poor animals, when most people would run off and/or try to kill them. Really, you should be proud of yourself for doing something like this. Thank you for helping them!

That's horrifying to think those snakes survived by eating each other. Idk why that's so especially disturbing to me.

In selling/buying cases, the seller/agent is suppose to disclose everything about the house: what happened, if there's noisy neighbors, etc. I would check up to see if you can revoke the contract between you and the landlord for not disclosing the information about the illegal animals and then go into the process of arbitration because the land owner put you at risk of danger or possible death by not removing the dangerous animals left behind.

Oh honey, in this city you're lucky if you can find a place to live what with the damned prices going up all the time. I've seen people literally renting out their walk in closet as a 'bedroom' because ppl are that desperate. Honestly so long as that shit stays downstairs I don't care. Besides, living anywhere else (including my old apartment that was literally falling apart around me) you're looking at minimum $9-800 rent, not including utilities. That probably doesn't even come with a working oven.

I don't care much so long as any creepy crawlers remain downstairs until I can find them. Besides, there's a rescue centre here that will give you money for exotic pets you don't want. I called them up, explained the situation and they picked up quite a few. I kept the boa you can partly see in my profile pic (don't know what it is but it's about 8ft long and I'm told it's legal to keep here but I need a licence so I'm keeping it. I had named Snappy McFaceEater for its habit of lunging at people's faces (specifically the face, no other body part) but now that I've been handling it frequently it's gotten much better. It hasn't bit me in weeks. There's also a lovely dark red constrictor though I'm not sure if it's a very big ball or a small boa. And a really pretty snake that's sorta light purple with a yellow stripe down the back. And the last one I've kept was this decent sized white snake with brown spots kinda like a snowflake Appaloosa horse. We also found a dead snake that had two heads well a head and a half formed one sticking out weird and creepy like. Also, I don't care if there is a way out of the contract because the average for a cheap illegal suite here is about 800$Can. I've seen people who are actually renting out walk in closets because people are so desperate for housing now. A legal basement suite is probably about 1200$Can. This is all before things like hydro, electricity, Internet etc. Considering I'm paying 200$Can plus the utility bills for a three bedroom house with a basement I'm not complaining. I did expect something if it was that price. Turns out the landlords terrified of anything without legs... Or two many legs for that matter and didn't want to pay to get rid of all the animals. Also if anybody has names for the above mentioned snakes feel free to mention. I can't keep calling him Snappy McFaceEater now that he's stopped mostly trying to eat people's faces.

You could name one of them fluffy, if only to mess with people. And maybe name one of them voldermort. Had i a snake, i would seriously consider that name. I'm not saying i would use it, but i would consider it.

Why does my 2 options for all the fmls that OP's have posted on are Spanish and the op comment never shows up??

I hate when snakes hog the laundry room. At least they don't spend a lot of time trying to get their sleeves untangled.
