lol. I have had nasty bosses like that too. They can't fire you for not working in your day off. It's illegal. I'd look for another position and contact the upper management of your company. It's your time off and they can't demand that. Uhh. Sorry that's a rough day.
Not illegal in Ohio. At-will employment at its finest. Employer can basically fire you for any reason they want.
The worst part is that Republicans are pushing these at-will laws in the name of "Creating jobs" and people actually believe them. Nothing like wage slavery.
Unfortunately most jobs have a "fire you for any reason or no reason" policy. If your boss wasn't such a dick the answer would be "no they can't fire you for not covering a shift", but since you're boss is a dick the answer is "yes".
New job time. And I've been there before.
Ugh OP... I've been there. It sucks... I had this great part-time job that i loved and I was free (minus school I didn't have. whole lot going on) so I was always taking other peoples shifts for them. Then I got a life and I wasn't able to take other shifts and i became public enemy number one. They made my life hell to the point where I'd go home crying after every shift. My parents were even telling me to quit (and they're the type of people who hated when I didn't have a job) it got so bad that I ended up snapping and quiting. Do yourself a favour... save yourself the stress and start looking for a new job. tl;dr... just read the last sentence
why would you continue to work for a place that treats you like dirt? please consider looking for a better job!
You got a warning ask them to write a letter Dear Attorney: The OP's give a shit is broken, on a scheduled day off.......
Nope I'll work what I'm scheduled and nothing more nothing less you give me a day off or approve my requested day off then don't bother calling me because I won't come in
Quit!
If you agreed to switch shifts with said person, and it was approved, you are responsible and it is punishable. If the person said that you were going to be there, and you never agreed, it should be documented that there was a miscommunication and that it is just documentation. I deal with this all the time where I work.

By law that's not a punishable offense. If you get fired for it, you can take it to court. Best of luck OP
Oh the rookie phase... If they seem that serious I would start looking for a new job or take advantage of the overtime.
