Today, I got engaged. My family is already placing bets on how long it will take for my fiancée to "wise up and ditch" me. FML

Two sides of the story here. For all I know, OP could be a thieving drug addict who has been in and out of jail. To me, it's suspicious when the people you are around every day can't vouch for you.

Not sure if making a shitty joke or just incredibly stupid.

Seriously, this trend of assuming the absolute worst about the OP and portraying them as assholes who deserve no sympathy? It's old already. Stop trolling.

No trolling here. People tend to always take the OP's side. The family could have several valid reasons why OP isn't marriage material at the moment.

What does that say about you ? Take a look in the mirror maybe you don't treat him right !!!!not trying to be mean but sometimes love is blind and maybe they think you are mean to him or don't love him the way he loves you !!!

Ignore them, no one knows what the relationship is really like except you two

"I bet $50 this marriage won't last! How about you dad?" (:

Don't get nervous or influenced by them.

Family know you better than anyone else. No doubt they are being honest with you. YDI

Hmmm ... Sounds like my family whenever I get a job :-/

That's quite mean but no one knows you like your family. Hopefully the two of you are together because you make each other want to be a better person for the other, and not because no one else is willing to put up with your shit :-) Besides all that matters is that the two of you are happy right?

Don't ask me. I would not bet on any marriage. I make a living getting people divorced.

Then just don't listen to them. They're your family- it's their job to tease you for little stuff and help you with the big stuff. Here in a couple months there will be less teasing and more helping, when they really see how happy and serious you two are together. I doubt they mean it maliciously.

Sure, family members tease each other about the little stuff, but getting engaged doesn't fall under that category. Most people would consider an engagement to be a pretty big deal, and OP's family is being jerks for trying to ruin her joy.

OP is actually a man. And some families do function like that, comfortably. Maybe not OP's, but some do.
