Today, I had a job interview with a person named Chris. The entire time I couldn't figure out if Chris was a man or woman. The interview went as good as it could have went. At the end I said, "Thank you very much sir." Wrong gender. FML

Ah, don't worry too much about it. To me, "sir" can be used with both genders to show respect.

@ #2, it isn't even women with man names, it is women with man names that look like men! Really, you should be able to tell, and typically it is pretty easy. If you can't figure it out then she look-a-like-a-man.

o man i hate when that happens. I've met a couple people who it was hard to tell.... i'd suggest... looking for an adam's apple and for heavier brow ridges. (signs that someone is male) though that's not always going to work either

I've got a friend who met someone at a convention or something and couldn't tell its gender. It had an androgynous name. So she decided to sleep with it. It was a man. With an absurdly large member that it actually *taped* back to encourage gender confusion. FYL, people can be *very* androgynous, especially if they want to. Also, FYL because you speak English, which doesn't really have any neutral-gender honorifics that I can think of that would be used in that situation. What with the existence of non-binary genders, the English language, and the business culture, have some catching up to do.

"its gender"???? IT? So is someone that doesn't clearly fit your definitions of man or woman not really a person?

agreed. YDI for trying to guess, and getting it wrong

Sometimes it is hard to tell, so you simply should not have guessed.

YDI, you could've just said thank you very much. STOP

chris is acceptable as either a girls or boys name. as for the gender thing, if the OP couldn't tell, then he simply could have left out the word 'sir'.

In formal employment, it is acceptable to call both males and females "sir." So unless you were applying for a fast food job, your life is only ****** because you don't know how to interact in formal business settings

Well that is her/his (its) fault for not dressing like a woman should dress. Women shouldn't dress and have haircuts and act like men and they won't get mistaken for men. Also, if she goes by "Chris" her name is probably Christina or Christin or something like that....she should be going by that not a man's nick name. I wouldn't work for a company that allowed that stuff to go on anyway.
