Today, I had knee surgery. I have to wear these lovely compression stockings, and going to the bathroom is really hard since I can't bend my knee at all. I ended up getting pee all over the stockings, but I can't take them off. FML

hey guys, OP here, and thank you all so much for the well-wishes. I forgot to log in before I posted the fml. I had a meniscus repair surgery, actually the second time I've had it done. I'm loving all your puns though. and to those saying to take the stockings off for a short time, my doctor wants me to keep them on until tomorrow, so I'll have had them on for a full two days. I'm not allowed to shower yet, seeing as my surgery was yesterday and he wants me to wait 48 hours.

Congrats, you're living in the black-and-white portion of the informercial from before the super handy product is introduced. My guess is it's some sort of piss-concentrating funnel.

Perhaps peeing in the shower until you can use the toilet properly again might be a good idea? Not sure what to do about number twos though...

If she can't use the toilet, I doubt she could use the shower. I had acl surgery on my knee, peeing does become quite the task. BUT I have no idea why she cant take the socks off long enough to wash them. I had them, but only wore them every now and then not constantly.

Maybe she means the stockings are stuck and she physically can't get them off? It seems like if she could she would just do that before peeing.

ACL surgery? Because I had the same thing

I'm really not sure how you managed this. I'm assuming you're otherwise relatively fit and healthy else you wouldn't have been a candidate for surgery. The hospital should really have given you a free standing toilet frame (temporary rails) or such like. Then it shouldn't be too much bother to lower yourself on to the toilet using both arms and one leg whilst keeping your operated leg extended. Also, you are usually allowed to remove compression stockings for short periods of time. They can be hand washed, just make sure they are fully dry and use lots of talc before putting them back on.

When my boyfriend had knee surgery he wasn't allowed to leave the bed at all for the first few days and peed in a bottle (the kinds used in hospitals, not an actual drinking bottle of course ;) ). Maybe you could try using something like this as well? (they exist for females as well btw)

That must be very uncomfortable.

See another doctor. There may be other options for you. I have had two knee surgeries (complete knee joint replacements). Before that I have worn knee braces - they just cover the knees. All doctors are definitely not created alike - Some are much better than others.

my dad had surgery and didn't give a crap about what the doctor said, he took them off for a certain amount of time. they're there to help blood flow. so you'd be fine for like a couple hours of having it off just don't do anything while u have it off

Actually you're better to do more whilst you have them off. DVTs are more likely to form if you're inactive.

If you're still having trouble wrapping your legs in plastic bags help. And spread something absorbant on the floor to catch the run off. Oh and when you take that first shower make sure there's someone with you because you're going to be unsteady and you don't wanna be lying in the tub in pain by yourself.

I've had operations and hamstring stretches where I used to be in a long leg cast that kept my knee from bending. I joked that I looked like a drunk obtuse triangle in the bathroom.

Good luck OP! My mom had her second knee replacement a little more than two months ago and she is progressing miraculously!! I wish the same for you.

honestly that's exactly how I feel! this leg brace goes basically from my waist to just above my ankle

Frebreeze and cologne shall be your best friends

If you still need to wear those stocking afterwards, here is what worked for me: stick a wad of toilet paper halfway into the top of each stocking to catch the drizzle.

Dude? Or chick? I only had to wear the stockings for a day or so. Walkers are easier than crutches and put all your weight on the bowl to cut off stream. Yes it works

Also you probably know to do this but to make it easier to get in and out on bed or on the couch and stuff, hook your good leg underneath the bad one and swing yourself around :)

YES. After getting my brace off from a torn ACL I thought it was enough to have Mother in the living room while I showered...it wasn't. I started to fall and grabbed the shower curtain. My momentum caused me to roll up in the curtain like a burrito and then fall out of the tub and get wedged between the tub and the toilet. Over 10 years later Mother still says she wishes she had taken a picture of me before she helped me up. :/ Anyway, have someone with you who you don't mind seeing you naked, because you will want to hold their arm during the first shower.

Try the P-style. Then you can stand to pee, no need to bend your knees!

Lucky it's only 2 days! I had my ACL repaired and I was in a compression sock for 9 days!! Not fun going without a shower for that long...

I actually am still wearing the stockings! It was two days until I could take them off and have a shower, but sadly I still have to wear the stockings until the end of this week
