Today, I had to have a long and awkward meeting with my boss. It wouldn't have been too awkward though, if I didn't have to avoid staring at her exposed breast whilst she fed her 8 week old baby. FML

Wow, didn't realise this would get so much attention so quickly. Thanks guys! Not suprised that this has stirred a debate on breast feeding as a whole though... To clarify, my boss has recently had a child (duh!) and has therefore been on maternity leave. This is the first time she's come back to work. I actually work in a research lab, and so my boss gathered myself and a few of my coworkers (a doctor and a PhD student) together in an office to discuss the progress of our research since she's been absent. I didn't mind having the meeting, I didn't mind that the kid was there too, and I definitley didn't mind her having to feed the child (nor do I ever mind when any woman has to do this, but especially in this case because she asked us all if it was OK to feed her before doing anything). But I have never had to work so hard on maintaining eye contact in my life! Awkward!

That's the strangest place and time to be breast feeding.. I wouldn't know where to look if I was stuck in that position.

indecent exposure is indecent exposure no matter what the intention is. don't be ignorant about our western culture. I have never know a woman to get arrested for breast feeding it just makes others uncomfortable. known plenty arrested for flashing.

She should know that there's a time and place. Breast feeding and meeting isn't one of them

Babies have their own schedule. Most workplaces in the US do not give enough paid leave to cover breastfeeding. Doubly so for those working on time-sensitive project. I feel OP for the awkwardness, and am glad his boss was polite about it. Ask your mother how "convenient" your breastfeeding demands were.

Wow! Do you live in the dark ages?? Get over it, it's just a breast and it's perfectly legal and natural!

So is taking a piss or a dump. I don't think you would "get over it" if your boss went to the bathroom in front of you during a meeting. Breastfeeding during a meeting is incredibly unprofessional at the least.

"Taking a dump," as you so eloquently put it, is NOT the same as feeding a baby. Breast feeding a baby is sanitary and nurturing; defecating is unsanitary and merely necessary. The two are NOT equivalent by any stretch of the imagination.

Get over it. It's a natural way to feed your child. We can have guns, drugs, and explicit sex topics but we can't handle a common human nature that was around before suits and ties.

Ok this is my own opinion so please no one get offended, but my thoughts on this is as follows; yes, breast feeding is as natural as they come but there is a time and a place. Doing it in a public place like a park or a sports stadium is a 'no' in my book, yet if you breastfeed in the comfort of your own home/room or anyplace that not a lot of people would stumble upon, then it's acceptable. Since she is the boss she obviously has her own room where she can breastfeed privately. But doing it in front of someone during a meeting is just unprofessional and you have to wonder why she brought an 8 week infant to the workplace in the first place.

She have ask to try a sample

Oh no! Not a small amount of unclothed flesh used to provide nourishment to a child! Anything but that!

Grow up! Would you prefer that she NOT feed her baby? If it's such a huge issue for you, just mention it as nicely as possible and ask if she wouldn't mind using a light weight cover up OR ask if you could just meet with her later. And to the people above who ask why she had to bring young infant to work with her, please get a clue! She had to do it to keep her job and properly care for her child. It's not fair that she should have to choose between being a fantastic mom and being a professional, but that's the way our world works and she's obviously doing her utmost to be both. Cut her some slack!
