Today, I had to present a program to my supervisors in University. Not being a native English speaker, I used my own invented abbreviations for parameters in the program. Apparently STD is not an appropriate abbreviation for "standard deviation." I can still hear them laughing. FML

that seems like a perfectly acceptable abbreviation. I've seen it like that before. And, besides, std is also the abbreviation for standard.

If your not a native English speaker then how would you write this FML? You're such a liar!!

Actually that is the proper abbreviation for standard deviation. The people in your class just must be immature lol

I did the same in math once on a test by accident because it was so long to write it out. My teacher circled it and wrote, "What the hell??" What I write now is St. Dev. I hate stats..

Well, obviously it doesn't stand for standard deviation! It stands for Self Taught Drummer! I swear, kids these days...

Not your fault OP. just next time I'd briefly research your terms before using them:)

Joke's on them! They're called "STI's" now!

I think they were just laughing at you saying STD, with your accent. That's all.
