Today, I joked with a pregnant girl in a state juvenile correctional facility where I work that eating a lot of candy would damage the unborn baby's teeth. Without batting an eye, she responded that she would simply "eat some toothpaste after the candy." FML

OP here. Yeah, I was joking, they aren't always the most sophisticated of jokes, but it gives one a sense of where the kid may or may not be coming from. The kid, unfortunately, was not joking, and I had to explain a few things to her. Thanx for the comments. For those of you who said stop joking around and do your job...it'd be a mighty dreary place if there was no humor (lame as it may or may not be). It IS a portion of our job. This post was mostly meant as a, "f" all our lives if this is what the future holds.

honestly, eating foods that damage your teeth, and not taking care of your own teeth IS damaging to your fetus, and can give your baby similar problems. So, you were actually giving pretty solid advice. I still agree that this girl is an idiot.

Op, I commend you for your job. I couldn't do it. Keep being a brightly whimsical person, and show these young people there are good prospectives everywhere. They can be successful adults despite having troubled childhoods, and even having babies at a young age isn't always the worst thing. Teach them well, and hope for a better tomorrow. :)

keep it up OP!! I was a troubled kid, yeah there were jerks where I was locked up but the nice ones, they were the ones you didnt want to disappoint and come back to face. Keep joking and helping them! Some of us turn out to be good people!

Keep doing what your doing OP, you could very well be the only good role model for some of these kids! Just because they have a troubled home life doesn't mean people should give up on them!

hey OP I know this is an old post but it came across my randoms feed. as some one who works in corrections I just love this post! I always joke with the kids and the adults I work with.
