Today, I learned, 90 horrifying minutes into a college exam, that my 85-year-old calculus teacher had spent the last three weeks teaching us the wrong chapter. FML

His qualifications as a teacher just don't add up. Hope you can work out your problems.

I may be speaking in hyperbole and I hope I don't go off on a tangent, but I think this is a sine that sumthing is wrong with how he functions as a teacher. Looking at it from another angle, obviously you can't count on him to teach you the right material. I hope he eats some humble pi and retires as he is clearly past his prime. Good luck.

That sucks and calculus is hard enough as it is.

It took you 90 minutes to figure that out?

Haha, that was my first thought too, surprised no one else has mentioned it earlier. Doesn't really make it anymore FML-y either so seems an odd thing to add...

I suppose maybe OP's trying to emphasise that he had 90 whole minutes of hell....but personally I think I'd rather 90 minutes of confusion but being distracted and hopeful by still trying to figure it out then realising immediately and having a whole exam of knowing I'm completely ******.

I'd much rather realize we weren't taught the material so I could challenge it immidiately. Beats the hell out of wasting 90 minutes.

File a complaint with his department. If possible, get other students involved. You might be able to get a new exam or action taken on your behalf.

85 year old and he is still teaching??? Don't you have a retirement age in the US?

There seems to be discontinuities in his method of teaching.

Or maybe you spent three weeks learning the wrong chapter compared to what the class was doing.

I wonder if there is a Limit to the teacher's incompetence or if it stretches on to Infinity. There can certainly be a Differential when learning the correct chapter. In fact I would think it Integral, plus a Constant.

I heard a lot more people can't afford to retire even in their 80's now, in the US anyway. Sad.

Where I live a lot of older people have minor jobs like the cashiers at the grocery store probably because they need the money and most of the younger people have gone to at least halfway across the country to find real work. Double sad.
