If you want to talk shit about work, don't do it on your company's equipment WHILE at work. You and your friend both deserved it. We all complain about work but while you're being paid, act professional. Leave the shit talking outside the workforce. Don't be so immature.

I once got busted for some things a co-worker and I had an email conversation about, while using our work email...it was very embarrassing, but it was also almost 20 years ago! I think perhaps my co-worker and I can use the excuse that we had no idea that those emails could be monitored...but OP? Not so much...it is very common knowledge these days that work email can be viewed and monitored by pretty much anyone in the IT department at the very least. YDI for sure.

Unless you signed a contract saying personal emails could be viewed your boss is in violation of breech of privacy and your job is safe unless he would like to be the one who drug the company to court. Check your contract as far as company privacy.

Only if the emails were sent using a non-work email system- like through gmail or whatever, in which case the boss wouldn't have been able to view them. This sort of monitoring can only be done on an internal mail system, and there is no privacy in the use of company resources; just like if you work at a place that has its own Instant Messaging system, your IMs to your co-workers can, and most likely will be monitored and logged by your employer.
