Today, I taught my 12-year-old brothers that showering cannot be used as a substitute for deodorant, and that they should use both. One of them was almost in tears. FML

Usually you would have to tell them that deodorant is not a substitute for showering, but I guess that works too.

Teach them that if they smell nice, that they are most likely to get a girl to like them. Boys that age are mostly interested in that haha (from my experience)

Never before had I considered deodorant a necessity. I hate using the damn stuff; I usually feel sticky after using some and I dislike that. I have never gotten a comment about an odor from me, so yeah.

Only means no one has been brave enough to tell you. Maybe you look big and scary.

as long as your clean then I don't see why people think it's so important to use deodorant. deodorant makes my migraines worse so it's very difficult to use for me. However I always make sure I'm clean.

#94 People think that it's important to use deodorant because they've seen (or rather smelled) time and time again that showering alone won't stop you from smelling. If deodorant gives you a migraine then use an odorless one (those exist) or at least do something! There was a commenter earlier who wrote about alternatives to deodorant for those who literally cannot use them for whatever reason. Maybe follow that advice. But trust me when I say a shower is not enough. Just because you don't think that you smell doesn't mean that you don't.

Believe me, 67, I am far from being "big and scary."

Shouldn't this FML be worded that deodorant can't be used as a substitute for showering? Pretty sure if they're showering already, they wouldn't forgo a bit of deodorant...

dont think any boy at 12 will care that much about smelling good ...

You should have been "is that a tear in your eye?! You better man up better man up!!

My ex actually never wore deodorant, but he also never had b.o. A lot of guys actually substitute wearing deodorant by showering multiple times a day. Personally, I'm actually allergic to antiperspirant deodorants because my skin is very sensitive, and the sensitive antiperspirants aren't as strong as I like, so I just opt for wearing deodorant gel sticks. Your body is supposed to sweat, it's why it does it, which is why I just suggest finding a deodorant instead of an antiperspirant that works for you. As long as your brothers are keeping up a good hygiene regimen, they don't really have to wear deodorant, it's just a safer option if they sweat a lot or have bad b.o.

Op's brothers are 13, you really suspect they have thier hygene regimen that organised?

Have you tried an all natural deodorant? I use Tom's of Maine in lemongrass it smells nice and does not contain the harsh artificial ingredients that can cause blocked pores and cancers that are found in other deodorants.

If you said it the way you wrote it, YDI. If you meant it the other way around, FYL.

Lmao so they want to take constant showers instead of using deodorant. I think they're doing something else besides showering in there

This is stupid, showering IS an alternative to deodorant. In fact, it's better. Plenty of people don't use deodorant because they either don't believe in it, or do not like the health risks. Leave your brothers alone, OP.

Constant showering though can be harsh on the skin and actually dry it out because a lot of homes have hard water

That was my thought at first too - that showering could legitimately be a perfectly ok substitute for using deodorant - but that depends largely on the individual person and where you live. If you live anywhere in the tropics, no person over the age of 12 or 13 (possibly younger depending when you go through puberty) can get away with not wearing deodorant unless it's the middle of winter and you spend all day indoors in the air-conditioning. This most likely does not apply to 12 year old boys who probably spend recess and lunch outdoors in the heat, maybe walk or cycle to and from school, maybe play sports at lunchtime etc. If OP feels the need to tell his/her brothers that they need to wear deodorant, it's probably for a reason.

Lol atleast its not the other way round!!! It could be worse op
