You can't really blame OP. It's not like they locked the dog and cat together in a small room and said "let's see what happens." It was outside. Usually cats are fast and avoid dogs outside, but this cat made a mistake. Dog saw it as prey, instinct kicked in. A similar situation happened to me last year. She's such a good dog. I asked myself for a long time if I could ever trust her again. I just make sure she never crosses paths with a cat.
I can't say for sure its op's fault, but you can't say for sure it isn't. From my understanding, both animals were her. Usually you can tell if they are aggressive towards each other, but something might have happened or the dog snapped for some reason. It's really hard to tell and a sad situation
Or dog food for a night either if you let the dog finish... Just playin I love cats, pretty sad still though.
Divorce her. Let her have the dog
my dog killed my cat too. It was a kitten and it didn't even bother her. I'm sorry for your loss im here for you.
Goddamn. How did you get along with the dog after that?
Get your dog checked out. It may try this again if it someone else's pet you may have a lawsuit on your hands. Sorry about your cat.
At least your spouse didn't come in while saying "Wanna hear a joke about a cat?" -sees dog killing cat- "just kitten".
I'd get rid of that dog
Most of these people commenting, seems like they have never had either a cat, dog, or just not both. No matter what very ignorant about why this would happen. They all act like it's premeditated murder or like the dog was tearing it to shreds. I think the dog was just playing with the cat, got too rough with it, and hurt it pretty badly. My basis is having dogs for a long time, I know they don't often know their own strength. Especially when they don't grow up with others like them. If this was just a medium to big dog and cat then yeah that.
We don't have info to know how they got along beforehand. The animals could have shown aggression towards each other. Your theory is good, but only a theory. One out of many.

Your dog decided there was room for only one pet in this family
Poor kittycat. FYL for having to see that but I kind of want to say YDI as well. Not that you deserve to have your cat killed, but I'm sure there were signs of hostility between your pets before that happened. Should've acted on that. If the dog did that out of the blue without those signs, that's pretty concerning.
