Today, I was at a piano lesson playing a song I had worked very hard to make perfect. Halfway through, my teacher abruptly stops me and asks, "Did you notice that I rearranged the furniture?" FML

Jesus Christ OP, how could you be so inconsiderate as to start playing a song you've practiced for hours to get right without even complimenting the teacher on the furniture. Talk about being rude. But in all seriousness, next time try and figure out if anything has changed to avoid them interrupting you in the future. Or just play a quick game of 20 Questions with them.

That's terrible, find a better piano teacher! I'd be overly pissed if someone stopped me midway during a song!!

No, no, no it was D#, you have to be pitch perfect!

She may not have meant it In a rude way. Chances are she was just really excited about the change and couldn't wait to tell you!

She could've asked OP after she finished the song.

Whenever I coach kids, I always try to draw them out of their comfort zone to see how they will react. Your teacher was most likely doing the same by interrupting you. He/she wanted to see how you would handle the disruption, and if you had truly mastered the song, it wouldn't have been a problem.

That might've been the case but the OP uses the words "abruptly stops" not "interrupts" so I get the feeling it wasn't the case at all.

I've played piano for six years and I've never had a teacher interrupt me during a song unless I was doing something that could make playing it a waste of time. Even then they apologized because everyone knows it isn't any fun getting stopped during a piece. This teacher sounds like an idiot.

If you''ve played piano for a long time you know that when your know a song perfect you can play it without watching at your fingers, thinking and at some point even without attention (Im not saying it still sounds perfect). I understand it's bad timing of the teacher and totally useless information for the piano player. the fml is not the interrupting, it is that op doesn't get the attention she deserves. fyl op.

25- Not sure what the difference is between interrupts and abruptly stops..

Interrupting means that she just said it. Abruptly stops means that she probably took the time to stop OP and then say what she wanted to say. But maybe not everyone pays attention to the subtle differences of wording.

you should keep a menacing angry song in your piano reportoire for such occasions.

OP, your teacher is trying to feng shui the room in hopes that it will somehow improve your playing! I think she's trying to say that your efforts on the ivories are less exciting to her than moving furniture around the room.... Play harder, OP, play harder and see if you can keep her wandering attention.... YDI for not playing well enough!

What kind of musician are you going to be if you don't notice your surroundings? It's well known that Beethoven walked around the house with a protractor to make sure all his furniture was at the correct angle before composing. And look where that got him!

Seriously, some teachers need to CHAIRish their pupils work :D

"I said credenza, not cadenza!" This is the punchline to the funniest joke ever to maybe five or six people in the world.
