Today, I was cashiering, and a customer's change came to $5.51. She looked pretty stinking rich, so I just gave her $5.50. She demanded the extra penny, and I asked if she really needed it. She said, "No, but they do, asshole," and dropped her $5.51 in the charity donation box. FML

Why in the world would you not give someone correct change because they look rich?

I work as a cashier and you sound ridiculous. Why on earth would you not give her HER OWN MONEY because she looked rich?! Even though it IS only a penny, that is technically stealing, you ****.

Isn't it a slap in the face that she donated her $5.51 to a bunch of losers she doesn't even know when there's a needy loser standing right in front of her?

If someone didn't give me the correct change on purpose, i would definately tell the manager. I hate people who, just because they don't have a lot of money, they think everyone else who has money doesn't desurve the right amount of change.

you deserved that, you are an employee and you shouldnt make assumptions about customers. And if you gave her CORRECT CHANGE, she wouldnt have complained. If she asks for the penny, give it to her. Even if it looks like she doesnt need it. The customer is always right, remember?

Never judge a book by it's cover.

I knew it, You don't drink alcohol?!

You're lucky she didn't sue, it's technically stealing.

You can never tell if someone is actually rich. I make just above minimum wage and the only reason why I dress decently is because I shop at thrift stores or clearance sales. I also take the bus and walk everywhere. And I still get people who ask me for money. Only in America! So, don't judge just because "they look rich."

It's not your fault. It was a penny. Many times people just tell the cashier to keep it because it's an extra cent. You didn't know don't feel too bad but if they ask for it you should give it to them.

It's entirely her fault ! The client didn't tell her to keep it so she had no right to decide that she could keep it, moreover just because she «looked rich» …

Whose fault is it that OP assumed she could withhold a customer's change then ask her if she needs it? If I have to ask for my change before you give it to me and then you have the gall to ask me about *my* money, you better believe it'll be a problem. OP should not be a cashier at all. If you can't handle the basic concept of your job, it's time for a new job.

what the **** is wrong with all of you? it's just a goddamn ******* penny, stop making it so sentimental jesus christ

The amount of money is irrelevant. The principle of the matter is that the OP feels it's okay to withhold change from customers if they look rich, and that's theft.

Well you were being an asshole. It doesn't matter if you thought she looked rich or if she really was rich, that was her money, even if it was only a penny. If you give it to her and she gives it back and tells you to keep it for someone who needs it, that's fine and dandy. But you have no right to not give it to her just because you feel like being a prick.

You should consider yourself lucky if she does not file a complaint against you. Never judge someone by their appearance. It is one of the most fundamental rules of customer service.
