Today, I was cutting a client's hair, and she was complaining about how itchy her head was from having it too long. As I lay down my comb and shears, three lice bugs ran across my counter. FML

wow! at a couple of these comments. For one anyone who say I should have done a full inspection...really? You have had time to thoroughly inspect each client? You must have never been busy. I was so busy that morning I didnt shampoo my client, secondly I didnt even brush her hair out before i did the cut. When she sat in my chair her hair hit thr floor. she asks for one length, straight across her back. now she had very dark hair and any cosmetologist knows its easier to see in lighter hair. I had a cutting comb so I must have brushed some out as i drug my comb down to length to do my cut check. I was almost on my knees trying to cut this hair. Anyways its was properly handled, i left that station and everything there until the salon was empty and I used barbacide on the whole place and my utensils. Plus any cosmetologist knows once I start cutting that head, I cant stop even if I see the infestation, I have to finish, and follow company and state guidelines.

Walk away. Just walk away and tell her to stop by the store on the way home.

Well that's a hairy situ.... Just kidding. But seriously, that sucks. Time to disinfect the whole place?

Why so defensive op? You were busy, you didn't take the time to check & got stuck finishing the cut. Also, it's amazing how when people call you out on stuff you magically forgot to mention someone else washed & brushed her hair. Sometimes an FML is your own fault & this just happens to be one of them. Be more diligent next time.

LOL Not.being defensive. I stated I wasn't the one who washed and brushed out her hair. another poster replied "how do u do a cut without brushing her hair?? I can't" I want giving her s better explanation of the situation.

I've never been checked for bugs at a salon.

Not sure that you'd really notice a casual check, if you were engaged in conversation about what you wanted done.

First, to all the "should have done a full check" - I have gone to countless salons over the years and never ONCE have I had my stylist check me for lice. NOT ONCE. Not even after I TOLD a stylist that I had just finished a 2nd round (as per Lice Shampoo instructions) of lice treatment, did she check my hair for lice. She just started rolling my hair up in rollers for my perm and said "if they aren't dead now, they will be in a few minutes." And what is the point of NOT finishing the cut? You already know she has lice, it's too late now... finishing the cut will make it easier for the customer to treat their hair because their hair will be shorter.

thank you!! that was pretty much my whole point. I should have paid more attention.maybe but nobody thinks to lice check.clients! who has time??

Stop being a lazy stylist!!! You do have time! It takes 30-60 seconds. No client ever realizes they are getting a quick scalp check!!!!

I have dark hair and I've had lice before. People who finding and getting rid of the lice is easy because of dark hair obviously never had lice. Ever. She could of had dandruff, making it hard to tell apart. Not to mention how if you have a lot of hair no one wants to go trough every single strand. And my grandma who goes to a salon was told all about these regulations when discussing it with her hairdresser. So FYL OP.

Dark hair, had lice a couple times as a kid, it IS easier to see in dark hair if you know what you need to look for, but it's not gonna help you discover the lice in the first place, it just makes removal a bit less work because you can spot them better once you know you're going nit picking.

Just because you can't tell the difference doesn't mean a hairdresser can't. They are trained to look for it, notice the signs of all hair inflammation, irritation etc. they don't just -cut- hair , they have to learn about hair conditions, problems ,parasites and so on to even get a license. It's the same for esthetician a and nail techs. You may have a nail infection and can't tell but someone who is supposed to be 'trained' in their profession should know if you have one or not, regardless of who did what.

You definitely deserved it. You're supposed to check every client, no matter how busy you are. You can loose your license over that, so I'd reconsider next time.

I've never gone to a salon where they say " I'm going to check you for lice first." I just always figured they do it while brushing and parting the hair in random places, and it was even is salons where they didn't know how to cut hair. The only hair dresser that has never done that to me is my Grandmother. So either you guys don't realize they are checking you or I have never been checked as well but I'm going with you don't realize it.

Tell her to get her lice treated or 'IM NOT CUTTING YOUR FRICKIN' HAIR'

Wow you're a great cosmetologist. You're supposed to check for lice during your client briefing about what they want done. It's the basics. It's also a serious health hazard. Way to go.
