someonesometime tells us more.
OP here. First submission got posted :) there is no HR to talk to as there was only me, the owner and another coworker and we all got along just fine. I do have Resting Bitch Face but I'm aware of it and consciously smile to make up for it. I also did not have a bad attitude. The worst part was that I was still training so I haven't had time to meet the requirements of the job or not. Oh well, she was a flaky boss anyway. But she said she'd give me a good reference.

I see this alot from Americans posting FMLs. your boss can't just fire you for no reason. Speak to HR and a solicitor. As an employer, there is alot of paper work involved sacking someone
Some are "right to work" states. That means you can be fired or quit without reason .
in Most states in America they can fire you for any reason or no reason
Your boss might've been trying to be nice. You could've been fired for incompetence, and instead of honestly saying "We don't think you're as good as someone else we could hire," they tried to spin it into a positive, like you'd be better off without them. Not fun to hear, but that's why your boss might have chosen not to say it.
"You don't seem happy, and things aren't working out" is a polite way of saying that you have a negative or lazy attitude that is bringing other people down. In Canada (and probably in a lot of US states too), employers can fire employees for any reason EXCEPT on protected grounds such as race, gender or disability. They can even fire employees for NO reason at all. But if there isn't "just cause," which is something like theft or insubordination that can be proven beyond reasonable doubt, the employee is entitled to some form of termination pay.
As someone who has used the phrase "they look miserable all the time" to describe an employee, it really came down to customer service for me. Even after re-training they remained unapproachable at the desk. Never smiled. No inflection in their voice. She would make no effort to give quality service. And never once did anything beyond the bare minimum. Hopefully this is no way describes you!
Well since you got fired you should have walked out saying "Nobody would be happy working here having to see your face every day."
I was fired for the exact same reason, two jobs in a row. One was a law firm a week before Christmas. The other was a job that the manager begged me to work at for about 2 years and I was fired on my 1 month anniversary. I'm a happy, bubbly person. I greet everyone in the morning and I like to make people smile. I think it's an excuse they learn in HR training when they can't really tell you why they're firing you. My guess is, it's either a protected class (race, gender, etc) or they just simply didn't like you and wanted to spare your feeling.
Ahh, the curse of resting bitch face...
I don't want to judge your character, but if you come to work with a negative attitude it brings morale down all around, yes sometimes/all the time work sucks but work is so terrible they have to pay you to do it . just take the lesson and move on, employers and management know the work sucks but you still have to do it if you're getting paid.
