Today, I was grooming one of my horses, when she stepped on my foot. I yelled and frantically tried to push her away. She turned her head toward me and shifted the rest of her weight onto my foot. I'm in the hospital now. FML

Wow, it got published! Wasn't expecting that. For starters, let me just announce NO BROKEN BONES! HALLELUJAH! Seriously is a miracle. Just a super bruised foot. Second, just to give you an idea, this particular mate is the head honcho if my barn. She thinks she is just queen of the world lol. She hates getting her girth out on, and she knows when it's out. When you hook it up on one side (so it isn't even on yet) she gets PISSED. So that day she decided to just step on me and not move, no matter what I did. I didn't clarify that I did punch her in the shoulder, but this mare, dear lord, she just does not care. That's when she shifted ALL of her weight onto that foot. I wasn't wearing my (much more protective) barn boots because I was late for my lesson and needed to hurry. So instead of grooming and tacking in my barn boots I had my tall boots on. I've actually been bitten by the same mare, for the same reason (girth), and that was probably an even more awful bruise than my foot! I seriously don't know how I get away with just bruises. And I know what you're thinking, "Why do you keep working with her when she injures you 24/7?!" Well, she's an amazing horse, just very sassy lol. Also, to whoever said they had no sympathy for me because I owned a lot of horses so hospital bills would not be a problem, you're just dumb. I could've been forever crippled, and you said you have no sympathy? I could've been forced to never compete again. And you have no sympathy? Wow. I'm not on here looking for everyone's sympathy, don't get me wrong, I actually found the whole incident hilarious. But that was EXTREMELY inconsiderate of you to say that. Thanks for all the good wishes!!!! Smushed Sophie out! :) -OP

Ydi for liking glue factories

YDI for not paying attention to where your feet and the horses hoofs were

Sorry for you. My horse did the same: stepped on my foot and then more in effort to get off it sooner. All in good will. It was a rescue and had problems with the feet, couldn't feel them very well. Later became the most tender horse imaginable. Luckily I had good boots, no broken bones after a cart horse stomping over.

steel toe caps when with live stock and horses :)

If you wear steel toes and the horse that steps on it is heavy enough to bend the cap, it's even more dangerous to your toes. Because when he gets off your foot, the cap will still be cutting into your foot. For ponies and small horses, might be ok. Sounds like this is a big horse, if OP is in the hospital from only being stepped on. (I've been stepped on by all different size horses and ponies in my horse barn management experience).

Even the camp I work at forbids steel toed boots and most of our horses are mid-sized

sorry, I don't have sympathy for someone who has more than one horse. if you can afford more than one horse then you can afford the hospital bills.

Yeah, because having a crushed foot sure doesn't suck at all.

@44, If this horse was heavy enough, we could be talking about a crushed foot. A crushed foot sucks and, if you are *really* unfortunate, can lead to permanent injury that never heals right. Even without that worst case scenario you are still talking about many potential broken bones, possible surgery, and a long convalescence. And frankly it doesn't take a serious injury for this to suck. How in the hell does "you can afford X" become an argument for discounting physical human suffering? I think you need to reevaluate a few things if that sounds rational.

Also #44, just because they have more than one horse doesn't mean they're rich. They could be in the buisness of breeding, training, and racing horses, but unless you're really great at your job, there's not a whole ton of money in it. For example, my grandma is getting remarried soon to a man who has several horses, but he is no where near being rich. He is actually great at his job, the problem with him though is he keeps getting too emotionaly attached to his horses and then it becomes impossible to sell them, so he makes no money. He ended up having to get a second job to help pay the bills and everything. On the other hand, my boyfriend's grandparents were in the same buisness and they were really great at it, so they made a pretty decent amount of money, they still weren't rich, but they made enough that they didn't need another job.

No offense, but shouldn't you know where to stand and where not to stand in proximity to a horse.

They have a way of stepping on you no matter where you stand

Sounds like he was just Horsing around, could have been more serious if you got kicked or Bit, hope you recover soon OP

...So you're telling me you own multiple horses and you don't know how to move them when they step on your foot? I work at a summer camp for two weeks a year and even I figured that out. I've been stepped on a dozen times, you have to shift all your weight into them to move them. Make shooing noises but don't yell, that'll just scare them and they could hurt themselves or somebody else

Why the hell weren't you wearing boots? They help with the damage

Sometimes boots don't matter. I've broken my foot in a few places from getting stepped on WHILE wearing proper boots.
