Today, I went hiking at a park by my house with my camera to do some still life. On my way home I noticed some tree blossoms in someone's backyard and tried to take pictures of them over their fence. In minutes, I was approached and interrogated by cops because they thought I was a peeping tom. FML

************************************************************************************************************** Just to make things a little a more clear since I couldn't in the FML: 1. I am not the 70+ year old man from the other FML, although I did laugh at the idea cause of the coincidence LOL 2. I was not leaning over the fence, the fence was my height. I was merely holding the branch with my hand to the right lighting for the image I wanted. 3. I agree, I could've asked permission, but since I was on the road side of the fence, and this fence was at the back of their house, I didn't feel like walking all the way back around the corner to find this house after hiking. For all I know, they probably weren't there. 4. The funniest thing is, they did ask to see my camera and the images, and then just acted like nothing happened. But they did scare the shit out of me because I had my iPod headphones in and didn't hear them approach me and call me from their vehicle. 5. Lastly, F*CK THE POLICE! No, I'm just kidding :P They had the right I guess, but man was that embarasing. **************************************************************************************************************

Was it a privacy fence? If so, ask permission next time, and go back there for a better view. YDI. Amusing, though. (and while I'm here, I'll be cool and scream "Yay, first!!!111")

...And then you showed them all the wonderful still lifes from the park and the tree, and they said, "Sorry for the inconvenience, sir. Next time try not to take pictures over someone's privacy fence. Have a nice day." The end.

dude you can't run around people's fenced backyards with a camera and act shocked when people don't like it. camera or not even. you'll freak people out. you knew that.

To #55 - amazingkate: It's not like that. The way this was layed out is, the person's backyard faced the main road, so I wasn't in their back yard, I was on the sidewalk between the person's backyard fence and main road. So technically I wasn't even really on their property. Secondly, the cops said it was ok considering how the house's backyard was positioned to the road, so I wasn't violationg any laws or anything like that, even thoough the tree was in their backyard on their side of the fence. More importantly though, if I were the person who lived in the house and felt awkward about someone at my back fence taking pictures of their tree; mind you I was even on an angle, so there was no way it would even look like I was taking pictures of their house; wouldn't I have confronted this person? Just an opinion. But your totally right, the entire time, I knew what I was doing, but I took that risk. Just didn't think it would come to that though.

this wouldnt have happend if you werent such a pussy... taking pictures of flowers.... pussy

Is anyone else thinking that he should just show the police the photos he already took? Seems like a smart idea to me.

Still life photography is pretty much the opposite of nature photography. Which were you going for?? And either way, you should've just asked. I do that all the time and 99% of people are cool with it if you just let them know what's up.

It sounded to me like he was originally intending to do still life, but ended up liking the tree blossoms enough that he decided to take a couple of pictures of them as well. Or he just wasn't aware of the difference between still life and nature. Either one.

YDI because you should have had the common sense to ask permission.

Knock on their door and ask to take photos...usually they will allow it and maybe get you a glass of iced tea and maybe a snack as well (:
