Maybe you misunderstood. Maybe if you are young or look young, she assumed you were single in legal terms, as in not married. I'm hoping so, because otherwise that would be very unprofessional and flat out rude.

When they say that they mean married. As in - if you were married you would have brought your spouse but since I'm only seeing you I assume you are single as in NOT MARRIED.

On a medical chart, you're counted single if you aren't married or divorsed, widowing, etc. she probably noticed you weren't wearing a wedding band and just assumed. so don't feel bad, it's not criticism necessarily
