Today, I woke up and went to go have a shower. The trouble is, my bedroom door is broken and will no longer open. My mother's idea of helping was pushing a note under the door saying she'll be back in a couple of hours. FML

fwebles tells us more.

Bonjour, I am the person who wrote this FML and I thought I would clarify for you guys. The door broke overnight. I went to turn the handle but the mechanism is broken so it didn't move the little metal bit out of the wall (technical terms eh? :P). The hinges were on the other side of the door, and I didn't have anything with which to unscrew them anyway. I resorted to escaping through my window and climbing off my roof. :)

Jesus Christ, just because the doorknob was broken it doesn't mean the whole damn door needed to be replaced. As said above, OP resolved the issue by taking a header out the window (OK, not exactly) and then they're not making mom or dad foot the bill for an entirely new door and doorknob when only the doorknob needs to be replaced and can be purchased for $10 at the local Home Depot. Talk about overkill.

Thats just to funny youre moms awesome lol, but shouldn't you have known that your door was broken duh lol

Window??? What would you do if there is a fire? What about the urge to pee, closet?

Kick the door off its ******* hinges and go about your day. Its not your house, so your mom will foot the bill. And if she says no, take the door off of her room.

Okay, I'm sorry, but I don't get this AT ALL. If your door won't open, how were you able to leave your room to take a shower? If your bathroom is attached to your room, where's the FML? Which door did your mom slip the note under and why and how is it unhelpful? I'm so baffled. This is a terrible post.

She didn't get a shower. She was trapped in her room.

@ 27 lol you remind me of a friend

How did you even manage to figure that much out? This FML is intense.

How is your door "broken"? You could just unscrew it off the hinges; it's actually not that difficult, provided that you keep in mind that are doors are much heavier than they look. If all else fails, divebomb out the window. But only if you're on the first floor O.o

Your house is bizarre. What kind of moron builder makes bedroom doors that open out into the hallway (hinges on the outside) instead of inward into the bedroom (hinges on the inside)? Anyway, you don't need to unscrew the hinges (And this is usually impossible while the door is closed anyway), you just have to pull the pins out of the hinges, which is pretty trivial stuff. I'm going to say that your mom should have done that instead of slipping a note under your door and driving off, considering the hinges were on the outside. And you need to take the damn door off and replace it with a new one. When you do, make sure the hinges are on the inside like they're supposed to be, and you won't have this issue again. Besides which, interior doors are generally hollow, very light, and pathetically weak. Even a teen girl should be able to kick it in, and considering it (clearly) needed to be replaced anyway...

A hollow core interior door costs pennies. Honestly it costs about as much as a new doorknob. But that aside, she didn't say in the initial post that it had been the door latch, just that the door wouldn't open. Usually that's due to the door itself sticking in the frame, which would mean you need a new door. Unless it's a solid wood door, in which case you can plane it down a little. However, it's extraordinarily rare to have solid wood doors inside your house, and clearly neither she nor her mother are even slightly handy. That said, it still needs to be fixed if the hinges are on the outside, because that's just wrong, and violates code in a lot of places.

I wasn't replying to the initial post. I was replying to the OP's response that the mechanism was broken. Therefore, buying and installing a new door and a new doorknob would be a waste of money since you wouldn't need a new door unless some dumbass put their foot through it. It may cost "pennies" but that's still a waste if you don't need it.

OP glad you made it out through the window
