The tone of this FML reeks of prior conflict.
It's just a snake people. I'm sure ops roommate didn't let it out on purpose, they're escape artists, they need a secure terrarium with clasps on the lid. He just wanted to cuddle with you, no need to freak out
Entirely this. They're attracted to warm things, and socialized snakes won't attack unless provoked. (Screaming).
I know, because it's a TOTALLY unexpected and illogical reaction for someone to scream when they wake up in bed with a snake next to them.
People sleep with giant fuzzy descendants of wolves, predatorial cats, and other humans capable of horrendous evils of whom they trust their lives with. If you know something is within the general vicinity, regardless of potential danger, it's not as shocking to wake up next to it.
some people have irrational fears of snakes, so telling someone they shouldnt be afraid is like telling a depressed person to just be happy. i like snakes, but if i woke up to a pet taranchula which i am scared of beside me, for example, id be sooooooo pissed. even if they arnt irrationally affraid, i can still see how it would be quite startling. i like snakes, but if one poped up in my face id still jump.
It's common for any creature to attack when startled, with all the bushland near my house I've had to teach my 5 year old that if she see's any kind of snake that's not green then she needs to stand perfectly still and quiet until someone comes to help or until it leaves.... If it's green then come get me so we can have a look at it together
I may be wrong, but I read that if some snakes lie next to you they are sizing you up to see if they can eat you.
Fortunately, you're wrong. What you're remembering is a specific urban legend, which source amnesia (an interesting phenomenon definitely worth reading up on!) has caused you to extrapolate to remembering as a general fact. Snopes tackled this particular story. Look up "Drastic Measures" on there. I'd provide a direct link, but the comment system seems to dislike those, understandably.
#20 - Is it really called amnesia? I know the phenomenon you're referring to, but the name you provided doesn't sound correct. Additionally, relevant links are accepted on FML, IIRC.
I tried to provide a link, and the comment wouldn't post. Maybe it was held for moderation, I don't know. And yes, source amnesia is the correct term. It refers to the phenomenon of remembering information, but forgetting how it was acquired. It also tends to result in the information being mis-attributed to a more reliable source than it actually originated from. Several experiments have been done on it to establish this. There's a Wikipedia article for it that should be the very first result if you do a web search for the phrase.
That's true with very large snake but I'm guessing this wasn't a large snake so he just wanted a nice warm cuddle.
That's an urban myth, the story is always told '... a friend of my second cousin has a friend who's dad.. ' snakes don't size up their prey like that
YDI in my opinion for thinking it's not your fault you got bitten. it definitely is; you startled the snake
The snake startled OP. You can't blame OP for that. Would you not be a little surprised?
24 - are you plain stupid? the op woke up and BAM there was a snake. even if it was just my roomate that i woke up to, i would still scream at her (a human) for staring at me as i woke! most normal people jump when someone pops up out of nowhere. change human to snake, its understandable the op yellwed suddenly
it would be differnt if the op say the snake from a distance, but any normal person would jump/scream if a creature of any kind was in their face when i they first open their eyes, when youre suppose to be alone. if you tell me that people dont normally scare then youre just dumb, since its a normal reaction. duhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh
(sorry, grammar and tense are ****** up in the last comment)
If you leave it alone it will leave you alone...but this definitely doesn't suit that proverb...
At least u caught it before u were halfway down its stomach
Why is "pet" written with parenthesis?
Quotation marks.... not parentheses
Because OP is an asshole
because pets like that are suppose to be locked up, and not bite? (yes they caused it to bite by yelling but they were startled. they are implying it was not doing what a pet snake should)
Damn. That bites.
Sounds like it wasn't properly housed or taken care of ... fyl for sure but they are cool when taken care of properly
READ!!! If the snake is large and was lying besides you like "stretching" it can mean that it is measuring itself to see if it will be able to eat you!!!!!!! If that's the case get rid of the snake NOW
I was just about to comment this. Hope the OP reads.
Hey, in other interesting news, did you know they removed the word "gullible" from the dictionary?
READ: snakes are also cold blooded and are attracted to warm environments..... Such and the environment created when a person is cuddled up in their blankets in bed
This is not how snakes size up their food! It's an urban myth. how often do you see snakes in the wild lying next to rats before they constrict them ? Never!

How else were you supposed to react? It's a f@#king snake!
YDI for having such a delicious looking chin! ;)
