Today, it's my birthday. The only gift I got was a book on the history of cancers. Not the illness, the zodiac sign. I'm a Virgo. I don't even like astrology. FML

op here i wouldn't have cared about not getting a gift at all, especially since money is a little tight right now. But the fact that there was a gift and it was something that doesn't really pertain to me or my interests is was got me a little down. I'm still gonna read it and I appreciate the thought, but I would have preferred just a card or something.

And there you were, getting your hopes up about the prospect of reading a book documenting the history of an insidious disease, complete with pictures and early accounts from grieving folk who had lost loved ones. My condolences, OP. Wait…

Good for you? People who have grown up to expect birthday presents can turn out alright too y'know.

Sometimes getting somebody nothing is better than giving them an obviously poorly-thought out gift. On one hand, they don't care. On the other hand, they STILL don't care but now you're forced into thanking them.

It sounds like reregift that sat in someone's closet for quite awhile.

OK, so this was a gift from my sibling. They didn't mean anything mean about it. In fact they had thought it was actually a book about the history of the disease because they didn't research it very well. They thought I would like it because my profession is in a medical field and I've always been interested in the history of medicine and how illnesses have evolved over time. It was an honest mistake that we all got a bit of a laugh about. Also I did end up getting another gift, a box of chocolates which 'just happened' to be half dark chocolate which I hate but everyone else loves which means they split those and I got all the milk chocolate ones.

things like that always have a wonderful potential, imagine everything that could happen while you sit at a bus stop with a box of chocolates you don't want to eat bringing a book you don't want to read to a open-air book market or a garden sale..the people you could meet or the funny situations that could occur..by chance or error, a situation comes up that otherwise never would've been..let the magic of life happen :)
