Today, my boss called me to inform me that I'm being laid off. In my ensuing fit of rage, I deleted the recent project I've been working on for weeks. Pretty soon after, he called me back to let me know it was a prank. FML

Today, just a few minutes after I got to work, my usually laconic boss came into my office and said, "Pack your stuff and get the f*ck out." Apparently, half my department was being downsized. Thinking it was an April Fool's, I burst out laughing and told him how funny the prank was. He wasn't kidding. FML

Today, I was at work when a co-worker decided it would be funny to email me from my boss's computer to tell me I had been laid off. It wasn't funny when I was fired for real after "skipping work without giving notice." FML

Today, when I got to work, I found out that I was being laid off. Two hours later, I found out my boss had my name on the wrong list. I was elated. I went to lunch, but on the way back was rear-ended, in the rain. I was an hour and a half late getting back to work. I was fired upon returning. FML

if you're smart you're backing up the project to a server on your network. Someone in IT should be able to retrieve it.

Well since it was his fault he can't get pissed at you for not having it ready because why would you need to keep working on a project for a job you don't have.

If you can afford to do so I would recommend quitting and finding new employment. If you can't I would look for new employment while working there still. I know I couldn't afford to loose my job and a "joke" like that would be severely out of line. Also if he has any superiors I advise reporting him. Also consider he may have called back about "kidding" when he realized he never got said project from you first. I would definitely be interested in seeing a follow up FML on this one.
