Today, my boss called me to inform me that I'm being laid off. In my ensuing fit of rage, I deleted the recent project I've been working on for weeks. Pretty soon after, he called me back to let me know it was a prank. FML

You can't pull it out of the trash can from the computer? Or were you so pissed that you fully deleted it? Either way, that way a dick move on your boss' part. Sorry, op.

that is a terrible thing to joke about. He probly really did fire you, then realized he screwed up and said it was a joke

Dang, I hope your boss is understanding since he put you into that situation.

You can get programs to recover deleted data unless you securely deleted it.. and then well you've screwed yourself over. Hope you have a backup somewhere ;)

Even though what your boss did was terrible and not remotely funny, I don't think what you did was very wise had it actually been true. Don't burn business bridges- think about who's writing your reference for your next job. It either looks like you did no work for the last few weeks, or you're not reliable with deadlines. Now you know it wasn't the truth you've also dug yourself a massive hole.

Of course it wasn't wise. Fits of rage tend to hinder logical thought.

Tell him you'll have it tomorrow.. then tomorrow tell him it was a joke and quit.

Never vent at work!! You may need a reference some day

That's not even funny in the least. Boss has a twisted sense of humour.

If your company has proper IT support then there is a possibility that deleted data can be retrieved. Just try if it works...

There's still a chance to reciver yoiur files even if you used shift-delete. There are some decent freeware file recovery programs out there or if you don't mind spending 15-20 bucks you can get the really good ones.
