Today, my boyfriend moved in with me. I just walked into my kitchen to find my thirty year-old, perfectly seasoned cast iron skillet completely submerged in soapy water in the sink, presumably from last night when he washed the dishes. FML

OP here. I had cooked a dinner in a sort of celebration of our first night living together, and he offered to do the dishes afterwards. I happily agreed and asked him to leave the skillet for me because it requires extra TLC. When I woke up and found it this morning, I went to work making sure there wasn't too much damage done, and he was horrified when realized what he did. I couldn't be mad at him, because he was only trying to help. Also, for those wondering about why I've kept a skillet for this long. I'm only 23, but it was my grandmothers and then my dad inherited it when she passed away. He passed it on to me when I went to college and got my own apartment. Cast iron, if maintained and loved properly, can be the best tool of a good kitchen and can last forever. It's really not strange to small town southerners to have cast iron pans that are older than them:P

Hmmmm I don't think many people would know what's wrong with that. Lol I honestly don't. But now I know not to do that.

Blasphemy, he needs an exorcism to drive out the devil that compelled him to commit this heinous act against your cooking implement.

Ohh poor OP - "Whoa is me - I'm with a great guy and we took the awesome step of moving in together and then he did something really nice for me but he ruined a POT." I think you need to re-evaluate what FML means

You seem more bitter about this situation than I was. I fixed my pan and explained to him what was wrong. We have a great relationship, and we thought we could get a laugh if it made it to this site. Then there are people like you who can't even bother to read the follow up which clearly has no anger, bitterness, or as you put it, "poor me". I know he's a keeper and I'm lucky to have him:P

My cast iron, fiesta dishes, or le cruset (enamel covered cast iron) don't even end up in / near the sink if someone else offers to do my dishes, I put them in a large tub on top of my dryer until the guest are gone. Mostly because I cant afford to ever really replace them should a well-meaning person ruin them ! Glad your boyfriend didnt do too much damage, good luck reseasoning the pan.

The time to start training him is now. I'm sure that only a few of us know the importance of not doing that. The skillet that is.

I made a similar mistake when I was visiting a friend at his mother's house when I was in my early 20's only I scrubbed it until it was as shiny as I could get it. She was not happy.

Be happy that he at least took initiative in doing the dishes. Not everyone understands about seasoning cast iron skillets.

what the actual ****!?!? I would cry, then beat him with it.

how do you clean a cast iron skilled if you can't soak it?

I'll be honest, I learned the hard way about that when I washed my friends dishes and had his cast iron skillet soaking. All he did was dry it, rub it with salt, and then rub it with oil. ? never knew you weren't supposed to till that moment. Just explain it to the guy. At least he tried
