OP here. I had cooked a dinner in a sort of celebration of our first night living together, and he offered to do the dishes afterwards. I happily agreed and asked him to leave the skillet for me because it requires extra TLC. When I woke up and found it this morning, I went to work making sure there wasn't too much damage done, and he was horrified when realized what he did. I couldn't be mad at him, because he was only trying to help. Also, for those wondering about why I've kept a skillet for this long. I'm only 23, but it was my grandmothers and then my dad inherited it when she passed away. He passed it on to me when I went to college and got my own apartment. Cast iron, if maintained and loved properly, can be the best tool of a good kitchen and can last forever. It's really not strange to small town southerners to have cast iron pans that are older than them:P

Be sure to give it a good cleaning now that it is "ruined". Sandblasting and certain acids can get the whole pan back to raw cast state. Then you can "lard & potatoes" it back to a healthy state of seasoning. I do this every 2-3 years with my original Griswolds as well as the newer heavy Lodge ones. G'luck.
YDI completely. you should have said not to do that. most people that dont have cast iron dont know that
You must not have read my follow up. I told him to leave it to me, but he thought he was doing me a favor and did it himself.
Most people know this. My husband is a back woods mechanic and knows this.
My girlfriend did the same thing to me. I feel you so hard right now.
maybe it needed to soak to make it easier to clean.
Actually, they're easiest to clean if you let them cool off and the food dry on; it then flakes right off with a very little bit of scrubbing. Trying to soak food (like scrambled eggs) off instead of letting it dry on just seems to make it bond harder with the metal; it seems to become more porous as it heats.
you can reseason it and after a wash with soap and water is the best time to do it :)
What is with all of the ridiculous comments saying that she should be thankful that her boyfriend cleans? Men should do their share of the chores. Most of the men that I know are cleaner than I am.
Your pan is not lost completely it is very easy to re cure a cast iron pan, my grandmother is known for take old, misused cast iron cook wear and recurring them like new, just look up how to cure cast iron. The great thing about cast iron is you can use and abuse it for decades if you just know how to take care of it! (I suggest showing your boyfriend how to cure cast iron and how to take care of it once you fix it)
Ouch. My bf would be a dead man for that. Luckily he's smart and knows not to mess with my cast iron.

Hmmmm I don't think many people would know what's wrong with that. Lol I honestly don't. But now I know not to do that.
Blasphemy, he needs an exorcism to drive out the devil that compelled him to commit this heinous act against your cooking implement.
