Today, my dad came over and ordered me, a 43 year-old woman, to purchase a kitchen table. He and my sisters are embarassed that we are still using a plastic folding table. It doesn't matter to them that we have just spent over $30,000 on renovations. His cousins are coming from Italy. FML

there are so many things going on here

If you're gonna spend/care that much about your house, why would you still have a plastic table?

Sorry but why is it relevant to add that your dad's cousins are coming from Italy? Unless your dad (or his cousins) are gonna pay for a new kitchen table, wait til you can afford one. They need to get over it and move on with their life

I agree with him grow up and buy real furniture and then if there's extra money you can Reno

Is it still technically your house, and they're staying with you? Because you can give them a subtle reminder that if they're so embarrassed by your home, they can move out; maybe the street will be more appealing to your father's cousins.

Sorry, I read it wrong, please ignore that comment.

Don't worry, when Trump is elected president no one will want to visit the US.

Just buy yourself a new kitchen table already. A plastic folding table sucks & you know it. However, don't let your Dad have any say in what you buy. It's still your house. By the way, why are his cousins from Italy coming to your house instead of his? If it's because his house is too small, or he doesn't have a house, then you have the right to call him a hypocrite!

Get some wooden pallets and cinder blocks...distressed furniture is the rage these days.

So many people are bashing OP about the cost of the renovation. Depending on the work being done, materials, and cost of labor... that's actually modest. Not to mention, it's possible that a few nasty surprises popped up. Just about every house has them and believe me, the cost to fix them is rarely cheap and adds up FAST. (Those of you who've experienced the same or who watch home renovation TV shows know just what I'm talking about! Some issues, once discovered, legally HAVE to be addressed by the contractor and homeowners.) Hopefully everything went smoothly, OP!

Not your problem, OP, it's your place. Why try to impress family? Get your dad to pay for the table if it bothers him so much.
