I said that to my dad once and all he said was "thanks son", but his face showed that he returned the sentiment. I'm sure your dad loves you as well, some people are just weird with affection.

Sweet sentiment but some dads are just weird about stuff like that. He's probably just bad at being affectionate and joked with you out of discomfort. When my dad's in a bad mood I always suggest going to hit some golf balls or tennis balls together, always lifts both of our spirits.
