Today, my dentist dropped dead of a heart attack. This depressing event was made worse by the fact that he collapsed while his hands were in my mouth. FML

Kat_Styles tells us more.

Hey, OP here. So as a quick update, there are several things I want to add. 1. My dentist was 65, very healthy, and his passing was very unfortunate. But now he's with his wife, who passed away from breast cancer about three years ago. 2. It says 'Employee' at the top because my mother was one of his dental hygienists, and I had worked for him as a secretary for a few months before he died. 3. The dental hygienists in the office obviously started CPR right away. They even shocked him twice, but he wasn't responding to anything. Paramedics took him away in an ambulance, but nothing they did was successful. It's quite ironic because my dentist always used to joke that he required his hygienists to have lots of CPR training, etc, because he was the one who was going to need it. We always thought he was kidding, but unfortunately, that was exactly what happened. 4. For those of you saying 'she deserved it' or 'why didn't she start CPR,' or 'her breath killed him lol,' understand a few things. One, I don't see how I deserved it, but that's your opinion. Two, I'm 19, I don't know how to perform CPR, and within a minute, there were three certified, trained, professionals tending to him. Three, even if it was possible to kill someone with your breath, my mom is a dental hygienist. My teeth are quite nice, if I do say so myself. Thanks for all your nice messages, and I hope you never have to experience something as terrible as I did.

Going to the dentist was bad enough as it is :/

y'all are so negative! leave her alone, shes nineteen, a dentist died while taking care of her, cut her some slack. OP - hope you never have to experience that ever again.. at least youve got nice teeth! use them to smile at the haters. xx

What most people don't realise is that CPR rarely results in bringing someone back to life. What it does is prevent brain death long enough to give trained personnel a chance to use a defibrillator and drugs. I hope you now take a first aid course OP but the poor man was probably beyond help when he hit the floor. At least he was 65. My CPR experience was with a 27 year old and no, he didn't make it. In fact the coroner determined he was dead a while before his cell mate found him, but we have to try even if they seem beyond help. I hope this experience doesn't affect you too much.

PTSD!!!!!!! Be prepared for some strange reactions. Weird dreams, possibly strange feeling later in life when you go to the doctor's or dentist's office. Maybe more depending on you, both you and your mother can help each other with some of this by talking about it.

A little too butthurt considering you made the goddamn post

UR 19 u shd no CPR I lernd wen I ws 4

for everyone saying "why didnt you perform CPR your age is no excuse to not know how to." If you are not a liscensed field doctor, you are under a lot of risk of being sued. A lot of peolpe sue rescuers because of a broken rib or something. the "good samaritan" law doent always protect you either. also, if someine died suddenly in front of you, you would probably be very shocked and inadvertently not act.

I can't tell if people are trolling or serious with the age thing at this point. This isn't even a game of Telephone and people are still getting the original words wrong. I think I would be scarred beyond belief if this happened to me. Reading this makes me realize I've been CPR certified more than once and don't remember how to so it anyway. I also can't connect fully what mouth to mouth cpr would do for someone with a stopped heart.

I don't get how people can hit "you deserved it", nobody deserves this.

I'm a nurse and can tell you that CPR and an AED cannot save everyone. Contrary to TV shows, a flat line can only be brought back with MEDICATION and CPR/shocking. And not often with the meds unless it's a chemical imbalance causing the heart to stop.

If you need help after that traumatic experience there is no shame in calling your national counselling helpline or even going into counselling. Good luck in the future OP, and I'm so sorry you had to witness what you did.
