Today, my English professor bragged to my entire class about how good my essay was. He kept on saying great things about it for the duration of class. To my surprise, he'd given me a C-. When I asked why, his only response was: "I'm a hard grader." FML

Bet you didn't C that one coming! I'll let myself out.

That doesn't even make sense. If he loved it so much why a C-?

If you wrote your paper anything like how you wrote your FML then you deserved that C.

He seems like a well C-soned teacher! (and also a complete jerkface)

Your paper was well? Why, was it sick? Clearly, your paper wasn't even GOOD. I'd likely give you an F.

#31, OP didn't say their paper was well. They said it was good.

Perhaps he should've edited his paper before submitting it.

I had a teacher like that in high school! she would praise you for how much better this essay was than your last essay, then maybe score you two percentage points higher.

Maybe he was being sarcastic and ******* with you? Either way that sucks. At least you passed though

It's possible to have a very good essay that has technical flaws which would impact the grade.

To drop what was presumably an A paper to a C-, the flaws would have to be severe enough to impact the grader's ability to understand the work...or at least, those were my standards when I was still teaching. If the paper was so technically flawed as to be incomprehensible, I highly doubt I would have been holding it up as an example to my other students.

I'm not sure how hard a grader my old English teacher was, but she asked to share mine because she liked it and still gave me a C because I didn't cite properly. Of course, if you're going to make a big deal out of flaws, the student still needs to know what those flaws are.

Ahh! I've had that happen before! Years ago, my english teacher spent the class period gushing about how good my poem was in front of the entire class. She then gave me a C on the poem.

Well then that means everyone else failed. Is there a curve?

I mean, maybe he tried to make you feel better about the fact that you got a -C on your essay?
