Today, my godmother informed me that the rule of thumb my ex had used for our relationship during a year of cohabitation was taken directly from a Cesar Millan book on "How to train dogs." FML

"Rule of thumb" comes from an old British law that states a man cannot hit his wife with anything wider than his thumb.

Yeah, Wikipedia is TOTALLY inaccurate because "anyone can edit it". Yes, anyone can edit it, but unless it's backed up by a credible source, it won't be allowed by administrators. And, if it is, there is a note that says "This is not information from a credible source" ir "Citation needed". People who hate on Wikipedia for that reason are ignorant.

Well now you know which bowl is yours and the alpha eats first. With a bit more training, you'll be able to pull him around on rollerskates like a pro!

Not sure why this is on FML. It sounds absolutely understandable to me. Why shouldn't he have done that?

What did you expect when you humped his leg on the first date?

That's unfortunate for you, but if you approach your next relationship with a calm and assertive energy, I think you'll do just fine. I think it would have been obvious though, it's not really normal for your significant other to go "tsssst!" every time you try to talk.

Why am I the only one asking what the rule was?

organisedchaos: well said. though i would have thought people would know better, both concerning animals and batteries, but i suppose people are on average stupid.

The rule was "Discipline and Exercise before Affection". And before I get 50 comments about being overweight, I'm 5'6/125 so it was more about control and less about looks.

Like I posted below, the rule was 'Dicipline and Exercise before Affection." While I'm sure some of Millan's principles can be applied to humans, I'm not quite sure this one can.
