Today, my grandma threw away my clear retainer thinking it was plastic from packaging. She has done this three times now. They cost 300 dollars to replace. FML

Hey guys OP here. To answer some questions, yes I have told my grandmother various times that I have a retainer, and that it looks like packaging and to not throw it away. I do keep it in a plastic case but I only wear it at night so when I am out shopping for her or walking her animals she snoops in my stuff. I have tried keeping it in my room to keep away from her but the door always "accidentally" opens and her animals find it and play with it because animals like the saliva taste on the retainer, it is then she thinks it's packaging and throws it away.

Time to find a good hiding spot for those retainers!

That'll take a bite out of your budget.

If you're going to be taking care of your grandma, she needs to respect your belongings and not "snoop" through your things.

My boyfriend uses a retainer and my father would always through it away (because it was wrapped in a tissue whenever it was not in use); I decided to get him this red handkerchief to wrap his retainer in so my father would know not to throw it out, we did not have a problem since. You should try getting into the habit of either putting it in the case or put it in something that she will not assume to be plastic of packaging.

Just keep it in your purse or in your dresser drawer. Its not hard to figure out. YDI

get a colored retainer or put it somewhere she wont mistake it for a wrapper

Why is it just sitting out? if it were in a case that probably wouldn't happen...

I hope she pitched some money in with paying for your braces.

$300? Forget that, my ass would be dumpster diving.

Maybe it's time to keep it with you at all times? Unfortunately, you do have to wear it nightly, regardless of what others have said (I'm in the profession, as well as speaking from personal experience). I hope she pays for part, if not all of the replacement. And dogs will seek those suckers out even if they are locked up tighter than Fort Knox, stupid buggers.
