Today, my grandma threw away my clear retainer thinking it was plastic from packaging. She has done this three times now. They cost 300 dollars to replace. FML

Hey guys OP here. To answer some questions, yes I have told my grandmother various times that I have a retainer, and that it looks like packaging and to not throw it away. I do keep it in a plastic case but I only wear it at night so when I am out shopping for her or walking her animals she snoops in my stuff. I have tried keeping it in my room to keep away from her but the door always "accidentally" opens and her animals find it and play with it because animals like the saliva taste on the retainer, it is then she thinks it's packaging and throws it away.

Time to find a good hiding spot for those retainers!

That'll take a bite out of your budget.

op you're not too bright, put the retainer in an appropriate safe spot.

I doubt this is accidental unless she is senile or something. If she is not senile and there is nothing else wrong to cause her to do that, make her pay. Not just for his time, but all the other times as well.

Here's an idea, put them in the container they give you & buy a few extra retainer box's.

1) OP has already stated that the retainer IS kept in its case. 2) *boxes

Stop putting it where she can get to it.

you need to get one with colors so she doesn't keep thinking it's plastic. after three retainers, you think your orthodontist could dish out a holder for it?

The animals find it b/c they like the taste of saliva? Back when I had a retainer, we were supposed to clean it daily, preferably by dropping it in a cup with a denture cleaner tab. Shouldn't be lingering saliva, that's nasty.

Maybe you should try putting it out of sight. Hard to dispose of something you can't find.

the first time she did it you should have put it in a better place.. the second time you should have made sure it was somewhere she couldn't reach/find it. ydi

The first time is an FYL. The second time, assuming she wouldn't do it again after being told what it is, is an FYL. But the third time? That's on you, OP. Sorry but YDI.
