Today, my hamster gave birth. The babies were very cute and I couldn't resist petting one. Apparently touching a baby hamster will cause it's mother to reject and devour it. I am now know in my family as "The Hamster Slaughterer." FML

Today I was born, and this strange creature towered over my mother and my siblings, and touched one of my siblings. Later my mother decided to eat the sibling that the creature touched. Now I am terrified of being petted. FML

I'm sorry to hear that. I honestly didn't know that fact either. I don't blame you because you didn't know and therefore didn't purposely do it.

However, if you touch all of the babies they don't do that. The reason they kill just the one baby is because it then smells like you and not like it's siblings...so by touching them all you usually fix that problem. Usually. Cats have been known to do that also with their newborn kittens.

at least ur hampster gave birth only once... mine gave birth TWICE! i hav 10 hampsters! stupid pet store...

How did you not know that? :|

another good reason to go with a dog instead. dogs don't do things like that, because they adore their master, so anything that smells like their master can't be bad.

thats gross but yes dog do it as well I had a dog that ate one of her puppies cause. a stranger came and pet it... animals are territorial so if it doesn't recognize the scent on the offspring theyll eat it because they may not know if something wrong with it because it smells so unfamiliar that's why if you pet sonething that's just born you wash your hands and each time before you pet let the the mom get a sniff of your hands first then pet it
