Today, my mom gave me my Christmas gift. It was a letter containing $200 and a note saying, "Here's the down payment for your apartment, please just move out already." I turned 18 last week. Thanks mom. FML

Wow, where can you get an apartment that only has a $200 down payment? (where I live at least) Down payments are usually $800-$1400 even for a one bedroom. FYL because your mom wants to kick you out of her home and into the ghetto. lol

That's horrible! You're still 18! I don't understand why some parents are so eager to have their children gone.

WTF is wrong w/ parents these days. I would understand if op is a jobless not college bound, smoking, pothead loser but I'm guessing he's not so this disgusts me. a parents job is to provide their child shelter unti that child is stable to go out on his/her own not just til their 18. my mom is fully supporting me w/ a home while I'm attending college and get my career. and she's fully supported my funding through high school so my life isn't incapacitated by some pointless job. a parent supports their child not kick them out

must have been nice to be a lucky little rich kid...

Um no...a parent's job is to support their kids FINANCIALLY until they're 18 and/or out of high school (whichever comes last) and EMOTIONALLY for all they're lives. I think you're confusing the two. Also, I'm glad you're able to get a degree that will help you get a good paying job without actually working hard to earn any of it. Glad you're learning work ethic.

Exactly right Janise. Stupid ass parent(s) begat stupid ass kids. If any children are being raise by heartless, careless or thoughtless parents, your upbringing is dysfunctional. This is not the norm, and will never produce responsible adults.

Ok so you're a spoiled little rich kid. Did you really think that the rest of the world's children were as sheltered from reality as you have been? Here's a news flash, you're gonna get that degree and that good job, then in a year you'll be back in mother's basement because of your lack of experience with the hardships of reality.

well at least you got a down payment I got kicked out at eighteen and didn't even get that. Consider yourself lucky.

Your mother is very cruel. What kind of mother would do such a horrible thing? She doesn't deserve to have a child like you.

Your mother is a heartless bitch. Take the $200, be out before sundown, and don't say goodbye, kiss my ass or anything else. Join the Army, and let all know that you need no one. Good luck.

Right. There are two sides to every story.

YFDI... you must be a real asshole for your parents to pay you to move out

At least your mouther wants you to leave. My mouther says no matter how well I get payed I will live with her untell I'm married. Goodbye chance of me getting married.

well if you're going to college after high school then fyl. but if you're not going to college ydi!

Lol my mom told me after my graduation she was moving across the country and I had 2 weeks to move out

I have an easier time believing the OP wanted to throw a FML on the site and has little concept of money, v. the mother actually doing this. Not to say there aren't parents out there who ARE, although why would someone wait for christmas. Why wouldn't she have done it on a birthday. Or after graduation. Actually, this would have been more believable IF the OP had said "when I graduated." Regardless, I've lived in multiple cities in Florida and have friends up and down the state. The CHEAPEST apartment I have EVER found in Florida was $450, and it wasn't in the best of areas. The cheapest I paid was 257, but it was 10 years ago, I had a roommate, and the first, last and security was the full rent (times three). Which means the "down payment" would have been minimum $800 (many renters are accepting first and security due to it being a renters market).
