Today, my mother and I got into an argument, and she told me to go to my room. I refused, prompting her to slap the shit out of me. I'm 29, and she was visiting me at my own house. FML

Slapping isn't abusive, unless used excessively it really just discipline, kids can take a little of that...

Actually, slapping is abusive and a terrible way to discipline. It causes the recipient to fear you instead of learn from you and understand you through communication.

Hitting works, don't get me wrong. For the parent anyway... it's detrimental to the children. It doesn't matter if you do it once or daily, it's never ok. Physical striking as a disciplinary method is a risk factor (not causal) to mental disorders, but more to the point, it's a clear indicator that you lack self control. Kids rarely do something bad enough that, if they were an adult, you would strike them. Yet so often people strike children, because kids can't fight back.

A little smack on their bottom if they do something dangerous doesn't hurt. That is not abuse. Hitting a child too hard or anywhere else on their body is abuse. This information was given to me by my friend, a child protection services agent.
