MainePains tells us more.
Hello, OP here! Apparently, the reason he has been crying is because the high school he goes to a lot of rumors are flying around- about Ebola coming to Maine. Thanks for the advice, but I have to say- a few of you are Maineiacs.

This is why schools should be allowed to teach logic, reasoning, and high-level thinking skills. Your son lacked the basic sense to head to the CDC, NIH, AMA, or WHO pages and just look up the actual facts. That level of stupidity deserves to have a panic attack and freak out. And YOU are going to have to step up to the plate and teach him about how to identify a rumor and what an actual news source looks like.
And YOU need to chill out.
That's sad.
100% valid concern. Ebola has been "airborne" in rat studies in separate cages with one contained airflow. Ebola has never had this long of an incubation rate, that's why it never spread in the 90s or 70s. People think the infection rate was blown out of proportion but the truth is its a different and terrifying strain that lets you, as the CDC reported, potentially infect people before you are a full blown Ebola ER patient for 10-21 days.. Underplay what you want but just look up older stories on Ebola. Usually burns itself out. That was its "safest" attribute.
Fear will kill more people than the virus. People forget how many people the common cold* kills, not to mention the influenza viruses. The fact is we're becoming ever better at developing ways to tackle it, you can guarantee there's a lot of money bring put into who can find the vaccine first. Of course that's sadly going to help richer countries, not developing countries. (*Obviously there's a lot of viruses that cause cold symptoms)
No it's not really a valid concern. I don't know about rats but Ebola is not airborne in humans. Plus, as far as I know, all Americans who have been infected with the disease have been quarantined making it extremely unlikely to spread. For goodness sake it hasn't even spread all over Africa. I live in South Africa and there is no Ebola here or in any of the countries outside West Africa. The American media is blowing this way out of proportion so unless you plan on travelling to West Africa and touching the bodily fluids of someone who has been infected then you will be fine.
There was a guy who traveled to Texas from west Africa who was released from the hospital despite telling the nurses he had traveled from Africa and had the symptoms of Ebola.
It may become airborne but as of now it is still one of the safer filoviruses.
I'm sorry I see nothing wrong with this, hug the poor kid tell him you love him and remind him about good heath practices like washing hands before /after using the bathroom, before eating , so on and so forth. It's scary and he's still a kid, thats no reason to mock him!

I live in Maine too and my little sister was crying about it but she's 9
My friend whom I was supposed to be visiting in New Hampshire in five weeks is now refusing to see me because I'll have seen a guy who's just returned from Central - not West - Africa and he thinks I'll get the disease and pass it to him. Never mind that my other friend was nowhere near the hot zone and will be well out of the incubation period when I see him. And even if I don't see him, the other guy is so paranoid he still thinks I'll be a risk to him because I'll be in Texas for a few days. So he's refusing to see me anyway despite the $1500 it cost me in non refundable bookings to make the plans. Damn, I should have turned this into my own FML !
Now that is a real fml.
Being from the Oxford county area I could see that actually happening, one of the reasons I moved to Florida too. number one answer to the question what makes you mad... stupid people
He has a point- that shit is spreading!!!!!!

The Maine thing is that you explain to him he's safe.
Ebola has been blown totally out of proportion, yes, its a hazard in Africa with over three thousand deaths but it won't end up being the next zombie apocalypse as is always portrayed with movies, we have unrealistic views of the world and the news goes a long way in brainwashing us.
