Today, my teacher announced that he'd be out for a week because he was going to Vegas. I happily said, "Woo hoo!" Then he finished his sentence by telling me it was because his dad had died. FML

What are the odds of him having to go to Vegas because of his dad's death?

Don't know if that was a gambling reference or not

That's what I thought too that he was gonna go for fun at the beginning... So it's not your fault.

He should've said "for personal reasons".. no need to mention about Vegas.

that's why you should listen carefully and keep your moth shut.

#19 It was an accident. Everyone cheers when teachers are going to be absent and OP had no way of knowing. The whole situation would have probably taken a lot of people off guard.

You're telling op to keep their little winged insect shut because they cheered at the news of no teacher? That's a very impractical and rather asinine request on your behalf. I feel bad for the circumstances but I guess op now knows to wait until the end of the news to cheer or not. Perhaps?

You know what, #19, you're totally right. OP should have been listening more closely to the teacher's brain waves for any information regarding his father's death. Clearly a YDI.

#37, OP should have let the teacher finish their sentence. They admit to interrupting them, so they do deserve it.

He shouldn't have mentioned Vegas ... It's not your fault OP

uh, yes it is considering op opened their mouth

You should have waited to hear all of his story before making comments. YDI

that's his fault. sucks to be you of course, but it's the same thing as if he said "I am going to go to Disneyland ............. because someone killed my son dressed as Mickey mouse

Well, if there's any lesson in this, then that you should let people finish their sentences and stop interrupting. The teacher could've worded things better and started with the bereavement part, but then, who is able to worry about this when they just lost a parent? Ultimately it sucks for both of you because understandably you feel bad for cheering now.

This happens, but you should wait until someone finishes his statement before reacting

YDI. What kind of teacher would leave in the middle of the term to have fun in Las Vegas? There had to be other reasons...

I could think of (more) fun reasons to take a couple of personal days to go to Vegas during school time. For example the wedding of a close family member (sibling or child), some congress of sorts where they are a speaker (quite some teachers do research on the side, either in the field of their subject or in pedagogy or didactics). They could go on an excursion with another class. I'm sure if I gave this some more time to think I could come up with more.

If a teacher announces it in this way, it's likely because of a negative or at least a sudden set of circumstances. It's unlikely they would just decide in the middle of the week that they are taking the rest of the week off to go on vacation. It would be frowned upon by the administration as well. It's an irresponsible thing to do. It makes a perfect case to mind your manners and allow someone to finish their sentence before you interject.
