Today, my whack job of a father told my 8-year-old son that his cat deserves a bullet to the head for being so damn stupid. FML

Hey, OP here. Anyways, for those who are saying I should take it as a joke--he was fully serious when he said it. He's not the best human being. He's done this before, and I don't know why he specifically attacks my son's kitten. He's threatened to let the cat outside so it can get hit by a car, has said he hopes it runs away and never comes back, and I even caught him trying to kick and/or chuck it out of a room. He repeated what he said to my husband, but claimed that my son couldn't take a joke and refused to apologize. My son was speechless when he said it and went to his room because he didn't want to be seen crying. He's only 8; he doesn't need to hear that his grandfather wants to kill his cat. My husband did the responsible thing and told my father that he thinks he shouldn't be involved with my son that much anymore.

WTF kind of thing is that to say to any child with a pet...

Good. Your dad needs to be out of the picture as much as possible. That's ****** up.

Don't be too quick to assume he won't. I knew a guy who shot his dog just because it got rough when it was playing.

All kids are different and some would be really upset by such a comment. I doubt they think the dad would actually shoot the cat, unless he has a history of violence, but it's still a dick thing to say, and pretty deranged to say out of the blue to a kid.

Op your dad could've been drunk, so don't take it too far. Or if he wasn't don't take your kids to him.

Being drunk doesn't excuse being a dick to children....

If he's a dick AND he's drunk around the kid, that seems even more of a reason not to let your kid near him...

sounds like a lovely person to be around.

I think you should do your best to keep your son away from your father. He does not sound like a good role model at all.

awww. Well maybe talk to your father about things he can and can't to your kid.

Until recently a statement like this was considered a hyperbole and would have been treated as such. I can't help wondering whether your dad is actually nuts or just needs to be told that you can't say that kind of thing anymore.

I don't like cats, but I'd never put a bullet in one's head.

My dad says he'd shoot my cat because he's always meowing
