Today, over a year on from my parents telling me my dog had died, I went to the shelter to volunteer, and saw my old dog. FML

How do you know its the same dog? O.o they almost look alike in the same breed, with maybe a few different colors and spots.

Animal shelters do not keep animals for a year, they usually keep them for under a week unless it is a no kill shelter (which makes your parents far less of jerks). So it probably is not your dog.

Bring him home with you proclaiming "Look who I found" Then drop some hints about how old your parents are getting and you sure hope someone will take care of them as they age and become less and less able to fend for themselves

You know most dogs last a week or less at a shelter before they are put down. Chances are insanely remote that it was your dog
