While it does suck, maybe you wouldn't have this problem if you said something to him before. Not giving him flowers but asked him out on a date somewhere. Make sure he knows it's a date and not a friendly outing. People miss out when guys have to do all the work: We're either oblivious to it, notice and don't care, notice but like you as a friend, or are waiting for some kind of sign we aren't alone in the endeavor.
