I can't stand leg puns! tells us more.
Hi guys, OP here. To all of you who say this was a bit ambiguous, I ran out of space, so let me explain in more detail. I had 3 separate USBs, one of which I carry around my neck to prevent this from happening. Everything was clearly labelled and everyone was aware that I was writing a book. As for the USB around my neck, labelled "Confidential - **** off", I took it off for a shower, and when I came back... Poof! Gone. To those of you saying I should move out, I'm 16, so no chance of that happening. And when I said "Trashed" I meant literally gone. Everything downloaded onto a separate hard drive and removed while I was out of the house. As to how she guessed my password, I may never know. But yeah, this is my follow up, hope this clears things up somewhat.

Your mom probably isn't that good at deleting stuff so just check your trash bin and if you use Microsoft word there's a thing under file to recover files
Parents like this destroy your stuff to assert their authority over you and stamp out any hope of personal independence. They want you to feel like you can't have any property of your own. Then they gaslight you by pretending they didn't know it was important to you, saying things like "you never used it." If she knows how to delete your files and backups, she almost certainly knows she was deleting your book, not the internet. "****" is an excuse, a rationalization.
Tell her to mind her own ******* business next time.
Awe man, that really blows.
you still live with your mom?
As a 16 year old who has just finished his end of year exams, yes, I do still live with my parents
Oh god...as an aspiring writer, I feel that. That hurts, man.
just like my brother who deleted my 47 gigabytes of research stuff. .
I'd ******* kill her
What the hell is your problem
What the **** man. She can't just do that! I'm writing my own book for a year now and I will be hellishly pissed if someone just trashed all my hard work. She got the backup too! I remember losing my phone, my idea vault, and I cried and moped for a month. My computer is my babe. No one harms my computer or else... Definitely go to the IT dude. I feel your pain.

Take it to an IT shop, deleted files can be recovered. And what the hell is her problem even if you had been watching ****...
Didn't you tell her you were writing a book?
