Hey everyone, OP here! I just wanted to take this opportunity to explain a few things: 1) I am a female (not that it matters), and I am "India Indian" haha. 2) The reason why I was so offended by it was because she said it in almost a mocking tone. I also didn't like that she took one look at me and assumed that I was Mexican (not that there's anything wrong with being Mexican). I just don't believe in classifying people by how they look and automatically assuming they're a part of a certain ethnicity. 3) I have been taking Spanish for 3-4 years, so I can speak Spanish quite well. And I'm also so glad this got posted :)

There's nothing wrong with being Mexican, actually this post is kind of insulting for all the Mexicans... Btw I'm Mexican
I'm white, but say Hola to most of my friends even though they're mostly Pilipino or Chinese since we live in Southern California (most people here can speak Spanish). Your race really doesn't have anything to do with your language... FYL if she said it mockingly/patronizing, etc though.
I greet everyone with "Hola" and I'm black. What's your point?
Maybe they were just being friendly? It's just another way of saying hi. ? don't assume the worst op, you could of been making a friend .
I'm Indian and 90% of the time people assume I'm of either Native American or Mexican descent. Nearly every time I go out in public someone approaches me and starts up a conversation in Spanish. Funny, yet annoying.
I sometimes say "hola" to people even though I'm not Spanish. it's just another way of saying hello.
I think this is the most pathetic attempt at a FML I've ever seen. Maybe she thought you were Spanish, maybe not - who cares? However, if that that nothing (I was gonna write 'incident', but come on. It's not an incident) actually upsets you, then I agree: you life sucks.

Since Americans are retatded I make the distinction by stating either east Indian or Native American. It seems to help.
^Believe it or not, not all Americans think like that. OP, there are some rude and ignorant people out there. Let's all just hope that she is the only one you'll have to deal with for a long time.
This is what i wanted to know since I live near both a lot of mexicans and tohono o'odham native americans, and can say for a fact they do not look anything alike, whereas the local Indians (who ironically do own/run most of the convenience stores) could pass for mexican. That's why i assume nothing till i hear an accent.
you do know Mexicans are not the only people who speak Spanish right?
P. S. This actually happened a while back at Dillard's. I was waiting for my mom and was just standing around, using my phone.

She was just being friendly. Just because you're Indian doesn't mean you can't speak Spanish.
