Today, while serving drinks at work to a group of people getting tipsy on wine, I joked about it being obvious who the designated driver was to the only gentleman who'd been religiously sticking to Coke all night. He coldly informed me that he was a recovering alcoholic. FML

While I agree that you need to be careful how you joke with customers, in this context I don't find OP's comment that uncalled for.. It is normal to try to build up a good rapport with customers, because they are more likely to come back, and in a casual bar/restaurant this would be pretty common. Also you wouldn't really expect a recovering alcoholic to surround himself with people drinking a lot of wine. If it was that big of a deal for him why is he putting himself in that situation to begin with? Regardless, don't worry about it OP, this shit happens and the world needs to lighten up a bit :P

OP, it's his fail for being at a place that serves alcohol. He shouldn't have been there in the first place. If you are a recovering alcoholic, then you shouldn't even be around alcohol. So, FYL. Not your fault at all.

Sounds like he does it just so he can harsh his friends' buzz.

He should get his act together. So am I? So what. it's not like you hold out your sober coin.

If he is a recovering alcoholic, then he is the perfect designated driver. He has no reason to be upset.

How would you be expected to know? And even especially if he's with others who are drinking. No matter how far along and how confident you are, a recovering alcoholic shouldn't be in that type of position. Around alcohol, and around drunk people.

You didn't insult, it was an educated guess. He shouldn't take his frustration (that he set up) on you.

His friends are assholes for drinking around him and that probably put him in a bad mood. No need for him to take it out on OP though. FWIW alcoholism is listed in the DSM but then again, so was homosexuality until recently. Just because something is listed as a disease doesn't necessarily mean that it is. IMHO (as someone who has worked extensively with alcoholics) alcoholism is a choice until you become dependent on it at which time it becomes a disease. Either way we are all responsible for our own actions so disease or not alcoholics should take responsibility for their actions. Let the flaming begin in 3...2...1...

So? I really don't get why OP failed, or why that guy would get mad at her. She just stated an obvious truth: he was indeed the designated driver. There is absolutely nothing shameful or offensive about being a designated driver. OP couldn't have known that guy used to be an alcoholic and that was his problem, not hers. IMO, if that guy made a fuss, he lacks a sense of humour.

whoa wat the **** Doc? wat happened to that rly awesome pic of an x-ray of a guy with something up his ass? D:
