Today, while serving drinks at work to a group of people getting tipsy on wine, I joked about it being obvious who the designated driver was to the only gentleman who'd been religiously sticking to Coke all night. He coldly informed me that he was a recovering alcoholic. FML

While I agree that you need to be careful how you joke with customers, in this context I don't find OP's comment that uncalled for.. It is normal to try to build up a good rapport with customers, because they are more likely to come back, and in a casual bar/restaurant this would be pretty common. Also you wouldn't really expect a recovering alcoholic to surround himself with people drinking a lot of wine. If it was that big of a deal for him why is he putting himself in that situation to begin with? Regardless, don't worry about it OP, this shit happens and the world needs to lighten up a bit :P

He could have used that opportunity to celebrate his sobriety and not be so cold hearted since you were obviously just joking.

You may have insulted him, but at least you were most likely right.

I don't even kno wat to say but I wanted to comment

Well shit, Doortje, I must have missed the joke too. I thought coke referred to the solid carbonaceous fuel derived from bituminous coal. That sarcasm is SOOO hard to get!

why would he even be at a bar then? it's his fault not yours

screw him if he can take a joke. he's no fun sober so maybe he should jump off the wagon... kidding of course so spare me the lecture

He won't be for long if he keeps hanging out with drunks.

OP, sorry that guy was such an ass. If he's that sensitive about being a recovering alcoholic, he really shouldn't be putting himself in these types of situations. Hell, I choose not to drink, so I'm usually either DD or I'm the one making everyone go to bed and giving them water and food. And I'm okay with that. He doesn't really have a whole lot of options, so he really needs to accept his place and have fun with friends, or else don't go out with them. There's really no way you could have known, so FYL.
